MTA gets $2m grant for autonomous railcar inspection pilot

 

The New York transportation authority said the system will support the efficiency and success of daily inspections.

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York, US will begin a pilot programme testing an autonomous railcar inspection system after receiving a $2m grant. 

 

The Department of Transportation (DoT) funded grant is supporting the pilot that will aim to improve the efficiency of daily rolling stock inspections on the Metro-North Railroad.

Metro-North pilots automated rolling stock inspection

 

The US commuter line operator will use a $US 2m grant to test computer-based inspection.

 

 

COMMUTER operator Metro-North Railroad, part of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), is to test an automated rolling stock inspection system.

 

 

MTA will use a $US 2m federal grant to test the system on commuter lines in New York and Connecticut, which it says will provide “early detections of existing and future defects, allowing conditions to be addressed immediately, reducing repair and replacement time.”

 

The computer-based system will permit Metro-North to conduct daily Federal Railroad Administration-mandated rail vehicle inspections “more efficiently,” according to MTA.
