Capitol Hill Seattle Blog, 11/22/21:

With 1st Ave streetcar proposal still alive, First Hill Streetcar and South Lake Union lines headed for financial cliff

As the City Council is scheduled Monday for a final vote on last tweaks to Seattle’s 2022 budget, one of the biggest financial questions for the city’s future will be pushed to the next administration.

Mayor Jenny Durkan’s final budget as mayor allocates funding to keep the proposal for a streetcar along 1st Ave connecting the two existing lines alive.

Seattle, WA Times, 2/9/23:

Seattle’s streetcar dithering criticized in federal audit

The U.S. Department of Transportation shouldn’t let Seattle sit on $7.4 million in transit grants the city failed to spend on streetcar extensions along First Avenue and on Broadway, a new audit says.

Axios, 4/6/23:

  Inertia surrounds downtown Seattle streetcar

For the past seven years, Seattle has had two streetcar lines that ping pong between different neighborhoods, never meeting. Now, almost a decade after the Seattle City Council approved a plan to bridge the disconnected routes, it remains unclear if the project will ever happen.

Seattle, WA Times,  5/30/23:

Hopes for a downtown Seattle streetcar find new life in Mayor Harrell

As he walked away from a downtown event this month, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell pulled a folded-up map from the inside pocket of his blue suit. It was a 2018 drawing of a proposed new streetcar line along First Avenue, connecting Seattle’s two existing — and underachieving — lines to First Hill and South Lake Union.

Editorial in Seattle, WA Times,  8/10/23:

Don’t waste public funds on First Avenue streetcar fantasy

Here’s a bit of advice for Mayor Bruce Harrell and the Seattle City Council: If you pour money into plans to build a new streetcar down First Avenue, scrap any notion of asking voters to renew a transportation levy in 2024.

Letter to the Editor, Seattle, WA Times, in reaction to above editorial, 8/11/23:

First Avenue streetcar: Expand free bus program

Regarding The Seattle Times editorial board’s editorial on the First Avenue streetcar, I totally agree [“Don’t waste public funds on First Avenue streetcar fantasy,” Aug. 11, Opinion].

The cost of a fixed-route streetcar is totally unnecessary. The free tourist buses we had before the pandemic and are now running again are a great way to travel around Seattle.

Feasibility Study for Proposed Seattle Streetcar Loses Funding

Seattle’s proposed First Avenue streetcar line, known as the Center City Connector, more than a decade in the works, faces a new obstacle after a city council committee voted 3-2 to eliminate a $1 million earmark for a feasibility study for the project, reports David Kroman in The Seattle Times. “Some work on the study has already been completed within the Seattle Department of Transportation’s existing budget, Housen said, but the $1 million is needed to see it through.”

Seattle, WA Times,  `12/7/23:

A controversial Seattle streetcar line — ‘Tramzilla’ vs. First Avenue?

Today, the city is pondering a proposed $300 million+ streetcar line to fill the center lanes of First Avenue. Catchily branded by its supporters as the “Culture Connector,” it would unite two long-dangling streetcar lines between Westlake and Pioneer Square.

$410M price tag for downtown connector as First Hill Streetcar continues to stand alone

With a new $410 million price tag for a long-planned connection to the line, it looks like the First Hill Streetcar will remain a stub.

It Could Be the End of Line for the Seattle Streetcar

Failing to connect two disconnected streetcar lines could spell a death spiral for Seattle streetcars, which are limping along without the center city link.
