This Fest was decided upon by you the participants based on a lengthy online discussion. It will be held as usual over the MLK holiday weekend, which gives folks time to travel home. Historically, hotel rates have been moderate over this weekend as well. The dates will be Saturday, January 15th and Sunday, January 16th. There are no activities planned for Friday or Monday; however last minute plans can develop if enough people are in town and wish to do something. This year's events will be an Amtrak round trip to Springfield, MA on Saturday, and a Metro North trip over the Danbury and New Canaan Branches on Sunday. The homepage for this winter's event is here. And here is a direct link to the itinerary. Those taking the Amtrak trip will most likely originate in Philadelphia, Metropark, Newark, and New York. Fares vary by distance, discounts, and buckets. Based on travel in either direction between New York City and Springfield, there was a special one-way fare of $29 (no further discounts). On Trains 160-460 this appears to have been exhausted, so the next cheaper fare would be $35.10 ($39 less 10% AAA or NARP discount). For the westbound trip, it was suggested that we stop at New Haven for lunch, and then continue 2 hours later. The $29 special fare on Trains 463-163 was already gone, so that too would have been $35.10 - and certainly if anyone wishes to forego lunch and dinner with us, that is what you can do. If we do Trains 463-135, as of now the $29 special fare is still available. You must select only an Adult fare, and book the one way trip in SPG-NHV and NHV-NYP segments using the Multi-City option. Choose Trains 463 and 135.The rationale behind the decision to split the trip and have lunch in New Haven was driven by the fact that otherwise we would be waiting on lines all around the same time for a meal that by the time we eat it we could be close to New York City. With the earlier arrival now you're already close to dinnertime. Eating in New Haven helps us better put time between our lunch and dinner meals so that everyone can eat at a stable stationary table not moving at track speed, and then take another train that arrives in New York much closer to a dinnertime that would be convenient for most.We will discuss dinner in a separate thread on this forum. For Sunday, see my estimated costs page (REMOVED) for the applicable fares. Those who wish to use Webticket can partake of that online at any time. Please begin to e-mail me and let me know if you will be participating, and whether you will come Saturday, Sunday, or both days.

Other items which previously appeared in this forum have been moved to new threads where they can be discussed uniquely instead of as part of this Announcement.
