I don't think just 3 trolleys will cut it to support the Main Street line, plus there are also the Riverfront and Madison lines as well.
Hmm. Maybe Memphis could purchase the Sound Transit South Lake Union streetcars. Just a thought.

Good idea, Ross. When our group was there in Memphis in 2011, we observed almost constant trolley service going up and down Main Street. I think only one trolley is needed on Riverfront, and normally one or two to cover Madison. They can therefore use anything they can get.

MATA Plans Trolley Return
While the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is building a trolley system "that will never allow anything unsafe to happen again," its leaders say they are working even harder on procuring new buses to replenish its aging fleet.

From Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, 2/19/16:
MATA piling up deficits as revenues fall and fleet deteriorates
The ongoing shutdown of the trolley system following two fires in 2014 has hurt MATA in several ways. The loss of the system's 1.1 million annual riders meant no farebox revenues from trolleys and no federal rail funds. Additionally, the agency needs to spend close to $2 million this year rehabilitating the trolley system.

Start Seeing Trolleys (But Not Ride Them)
Expect to see trolleys back out on their rail lines soon but don’t expect to be able to ride one for more than a year.
Officials with the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) announced Thursday that they expect to have all the physical work needed to bring trolleys back to Memphis in about 12 months. However, the trolleys’ return to service will depend on a certification of MATA’s trolley safety plan by the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) and there's no firm date on that decision.
It's Federal Transit Administration. Sloan

It's nice to get an update, but no so nice that it will take at least another year to see them handling revenue service. By that time the Memphis Fire Department will have time to hire enough staff to follow each trolley.
The substation pumped nearly 4,000 amps into each of those cars and turned them into fireballs.
Amazing that more trolleys weren't involved, and that people weren't hurt.
