Sound Transit news release:

Sound Transit awards contract to Hoffman Construction to build U District Station for Northgate Link Extension
Mar 23, 2017

Construction begins this summer for light rail extension opening in 2021

The Sound Transit Board of Directors today authorized award of a contract to Hoffman Construction Company to build the U District Station finishes for the Northgate Link opening in 2021.

The $159.8 million contract includes constructing civil, structural and architectural finishes for the underground station in the U District neighborhood, with entrances along Brooklyn Avenue NE between NE 45th and NE 43rd streets. The work also includes elevators and escalators, mechanical and electrical equipment, fire protection and emergency ventilation systems, surface restoration, landscaping and 100 spaces for bike parking. The site is also designed to accommodate future development above the station.

Northgate Link trains traveling in twin tunnels to and from the University of Washington Station at Husky Stadium will stop at underground stations in the Roosevelt and U District neighborhoods, exit the tunnels at First Avenue Northeast and Northeast 95th and transition to a 0.8-mile elevated guideway to a station at Northgate Mall.

Construction on U District Station is scheduled to begin in June.

The $1.9 billion Northgate Link project extends light rail 4.3 miles north from the University of Washington. Riders using the U District Station will enjoy two-minute rides to Husky Stadium, five-minute rides to Northgate Mall, eight-minute rides to downtown and 42-minute rides to Sea-Tac Airport.

More information on the Northgate Link Extension can be found at soundtransit.org/northgatelink.

June 20, 2017

U District Station construction update

northgate-link-university-district-const

At the U District Station site crews have been busy finishing up the tunnel/cross passage work and preparing for the station contractor to take possession of the site in mid-July 2017. Part of the work needed before the station contract starts is for the current contractor to remove the temporary concrete floor at the station box and haul out the materials along the approved truck haul route.

What to expect:

  • Sawcutting, jackhammering and excavating to remove the temporary concrete floor that was used for tunneling contractor’s equipment
  • Increased construction vehicle traffic at the site. Trucks will be entering/exiting the site through the various construction gates.

Work hours:

  • Six days a week (Monday to Saturday with occasional Sunday work for maintenance).
  • High impact work is only allowed between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

We will be sending additional construction updates and hosting a drop in meeting in July as we get more details from the station contractor.

Project update: Northgate Link Extension

Northgate Station girder installation time-lapse

In early June, Sound Transit's contractor Absher Construction Company installed the first of the girders that will become the platform level of the future Northgate Station where trains will run in 2021. Check out our time-lapse video of the work.

Cross passage excavation complete

Last month, crews completed the excavation of the Northgate Link cross passages. Ever wonder how these emergency exits that connect the two separated light rail tunnels are built? See our post for an in-depth look into the process.

Weedin Place gets a makeover with the help of Roosevelt neighborhood volunteers.

Weedin Place painting party on June 24th

Sound Transit helped the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association celebrate their effort to turn Weedin Place into a public plaza. Neighborhood volunteers started the day with a pancake breakfast, live music and a raffle before the real work began to paint the street. Congrats to the Roosevelt community on their newest public space!

U District Station construction update

At the U District Station site tunnel contractor crews have been busy finishing up the tunnel and cross passage work and preparing for the station contractor to take possession of the site in mid-July. Before the station contractor gains access to the site, crews must remove the temporary concrete floor at the station box and haul the material away along the approved truck haul route. Neighbors can expect more activity on the site as we prepare for the station construction.
