Sound Transit to hold open house on Lynnwood Link Extension station designs for Shoreline, Seattle
May 18, 2017

Public invited to view designs for light rail stations opening in 2023

Sound Transit will hold an open house on Wednesday, May 24 from 6-8 p.m. at Shorewood High School, 17300 Fremont Ave. N., where participants can view designs at the 60 percent completion level for Lynnwood Link Extension light rail stations at Northeast 145th and Northeast 185th streets.

At the event, participants will have the opportunity to provide comments on station designs, project plans, and public art.

Individuals unable to attend the open house in person can view meeting materials online and provide comments at lynnwoodlink.participate.online

A second open house will take place for Mountlake Terrace residents on Wednesday, June 28 at the Nile Shrine Country Club, 6601 244th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace. An open house for Lynnwood residents will take place by early fall.

The 8.5-mile light rail extension from Northgate to the Lynnwood Transit Center is in the final design phase, with construction scheduled to begin in 2018. Trains will serve four stations along the route at Northeast 145th Street, Northeast 185th Street, the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center at 236th Street Southwest, and the Lynnwood Transit Center at 48th Avenue West. The project includes a total of approximately 1,500 additional park-and-ride spaces in the corridor.

Commuters from the Lynnwood Transit Center will enjoy 13-minute rides to Northgate Mall, 18-minute rides to the U District, 27-minute rides to downtown Seattle and 60-minute rides to Sea-Tac Airport. Trains from Lynnwood will also serve the eastside and reach downtown Bellevue in 51 minutes and the Overlake Transit Center in 59 minutes from the Lynnwood Transit Center.

More information on the Lynnwood Link Extension is available at soundtransit.org/Lynnwoodextension.

By 2021, Sound Transit will expand light rail to the U District, Roosevelt and Northgate. In 2023 trains will reach Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Mercer Island, Bellevue and Overlake/Redmond. Next up will be extending light rail to Federal Way and downtown Redmond in 2024. From there, continuing expansions will focus on Tacoma, West Seattle, Ballard, Everett, South Kirkland and Issaquah, forming a 116-mile regional system.

Sound Transit news release

Construction now underway on all parking and station structures for Lynnwood Link extension

February 25, 2021

Civil construction is now underway on all of the parking and station structures on the Lynnwood Link extension, as the project continues to progress steadily toward a 2024 opening. Overall, civil construction on the extension is now about one-third complete.

"The start of work on the stations and garages for the Lynnwood Link extension underscores how rapidly the project is moving along," said Sound Transit CEO Peter Rogoff. "With each passing day, the extension comes closer to reality, thanks to the dedication of the construction teams.  This milestone is particularly remarkable given the extraordinary efforts those teams continually make to maintain a safe work environment during a pandemic."

The Lynnwood Link extension will include four elevated stations and three new parking structures that will add about 1,500 additional parking spaces. Photos of the work underway are available at this link.

Located just northeast of I-5 at the NE 145th Street exit, the Shoreline South/148th Station will connect to new Sound Transit SR 522/NE 145th Bus Rapid Transit service. A parking garage with approximately 500 new spaces is part of the project.

Located on the east side of I-5, the Shoreline North/185th Station will serve Shoreline Stadium, the Shoreline Conference Center and the surrounding neighborhoods. Improved pedestrian pathways will connect the station to the west side of I-5. A parking garage with approximately 500 new spaces is part of the project.

Located east of Interstate-5 at the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center, the Mountlake Terrace Station straddles 236th Street Southwest, and is a short walk from the Mountlake Terrace Library, new city hall and future Gateway transit oriented development neighborhood. There will be no change to the number of parking spaces at the transit center.

The station at the Lynnwood Transit Center will serve one of the busiest transit centers in the region. A new garage will contain approximately 1,665 parking stalls in a five-story structure. Along with adjacent surface lots containing 226 stalls, the Lynnwood City Center Station will have nearly 1,900 parking stalls, approximately 500 more stalls than are on the current transit center site.

Construction of the parking garage at the Lynnwood Transit Center began last October.  The parking garage is scheduled to open to the public in the spring of 2023, before light rail service to the Lynnwood City Center Station begins in 2024, in order to allow for the site work around the station to be completed, including the surface parking lots, landscaping, and other site amenities.

Stacy & Witbeck/Kiewit/Hoffman JV and Skanska Constructors L300 JV are executing the civil construction on the extension. Hoffman Construction is building the stations at Shoreline South/148th St and Shoreline North/185th St., while the garages at those locations are being built by Lydig Construction. Skanska JV is building the station at Mountlake Terrace and the station and garage at Lynnwood Transit Center.

By 2024 Lynnwood Link and other extensions currently under construction will more than double the length of the region’s light rail system. After Lynnwood opens in 2024, passengers from the Lynnwood Transit Center will enjoy 20-minute rides to the University of Washington, 27-minute rides to downtown Seattle and 60-minute rides to Sea-Tac Airport. Trains from Lynnwood will also serve the Eastside and reach downtown Bellevue in 51 minutes.

The $2.9 billion project budget includes up to $1.17 billion from a Full Funding Grant Agreement executed by the FTA. In addition, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau executed a $658 million low-interest loan supporting the project. That loan was one of four loans captured in a Master Credit Agreement reached between Sound Transit and the USDOT at the end of 2016. The one-of-its-kind agreement should save regional taxpayers between $200 million and $300 million through lower interest costs.

Share your priorities for Lynnwood City Center transit-oriented development

Sound Transit owns land next to the future Lynnwood City Center Station that will be available for development after we complete Link light rail construction.

We need your help to envision development at the station that will foster a vibrant neighborhood with seamless connections to regional transit. Transit-oriented development (TOD) could include different types of housing, retail, restaurants, offices and community spaces to create a vibrant neighborhood that connects to regional transit.

Learn more about the project and tell us what kinds of services and spaces would benefit your growing community at LynnwoodTOD.com.

Share your feedback by December 21.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this information with your community. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean.

Sound Transit news release

Sound Transit seeks public input on transit-oriented development in Lynnwood

Approximately two acres adjacent to future Lynnwood City Center Station available for future development

November 30, 2021

Sound Transit is currently asking the public to participate in an online survey to share community priorities on future transit-oriented development in Lynnwood. The agency owns land next to the future Lynnwood City Center Station that will be available for development after Link light rail construction is complete in 2024.

The land is currently being used as temporary parking for the Lynnwood Transit Center while the future Lynnwood City Center light rail station is being built. Once the Lynnwood City Center Station opens in 2024, Sound Transit plans to make this land available for transit-oriented development.

The online survey will be available starting today through December 21 at www.LynnwoodTOD.com. The survey will be available in English, Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Sound Transit seeks community feedback to help create a vision for future development near the Lynnwood City Center light rail station, focused on the opportunities created through easy access to transit.

A summary of the survey responses will be shared in an online open house in spring 2022, which will also include additional opportunities to provide feedback. The information collected from the community helps identify priorities for how the property gets developed.

More information on Sound Transit’s transit-oriented development program is available at www.soundtransit.org/TOD

More information on the Lynnwood Link project and public involvement process is available at www.soundtransit.org/system-expansion/lynnwood-link-extension
