EL PASO, Texas - The El Paso Streetcars will make their debut later this year, and those in charge of the project said the process of training streetcar operators has begun.

Downtown El Paso streetcars roll closer to completion; Sun Metro prepares to take over

 

 

Nearly five miles of rail have been laid, and the overhead cable system is nearly done.

 

It’s been about 15 months since work on the $97 million El Paso streetcar project began, and it is now about 95 percent complete.

Streetcar service will be operated by the City of El Paso’s

Mass Transit Department, known locally as Sun Metro.

The first of six vintage 1937 Presidents’ Conference Committee (PCC) streetcars returned to El Paso, Texas. The streetcar returned after going through a restoration and modernization program at Brookville Equipment Corp.’s (Brookville) manufacturing facility in Western Pa.

 

The restoration is part of an effort to return the PCC streetcars to service since their removal in 1974.

As work nears completion on the El Paso Streetcar Project, motorists, pedestrian and cyclists should expect some overnight closures in Downtown El Paso next week, according to the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.
