From WRAL-TV, Channel 5 in Raleigh, NC, 5/21/08:

Raleigh, N.C. — A citizen advisory group making recommendations for a multibillion-dollar regional transit system for the Triangle presented its final report to area leaders and transportation officials Wednesday.

From Trading Markets, 11/17/08:

Officials on both sides of the Triangle are now thinking a future rail-based transit system here can use lightweight coaches and engines over its entire 56-mile length, rather than the heavyweight units they once envisioned.

Story is here.

Looks like as often happens, the media is tossing the commuter rail and light rail terms around like they mean one in the same. What was proposed by the then Triangle Transit Authority (TTA), now having dropped the word "Authority" known as TT, was a regional system of commuter rail lines. Light rail might work, but again given the nature of the area, with three cities (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), and the Research Triangle Park set in the middle of all three, there will need to be a network of interconnected routes, probably on a hub and spoke system with the industrial park in the center.

Just for the record (and it's the fault of the media source), the TTA changed its name to TT a couple of years ago. They are now simply Triangle Transit.

I'm assuming TTA is still going to use dmu like Austin, TX, Oceanside, CA, or WES but not like RiverLINE.

According to the most recently cited article, the latest plans for a transit network include a mix of light rail and commuter rail, much like Raleigh's cross-state cousin Charlotte is doing. However this will be a believe-it-when-you-see-it scenario. The federal government hasn't been able to justify funding regional rail in this area. Perhaps with a mix of LRT and maybe even BRT they will be more apt to throw some money into this area. It's a unique situation with three downtowns (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill), as well as a major employment destination (RTP) in the middle. So the hub and spoke system may best apply here. Finally, the agency is no longer TTA; they dropped the word "Authority" a couple of years ago. So it's just TT now.
