The last week of August into early September represents the 10th anniversary of the Katrina event that affected first Florida, and then more seriously the Gulf Coast especially the city of New Orleans which took flooding from failed levees. We covered the rail oriented events on our board that year, and the years following. I invite you to reread the Storms of 2005 archive section of our board to reacquaint you not only with Katrina but also a large number of storms that preceded and followed it that year.
Much of what was destroyed by the storm or resulting floods has been rebuilt and continues today. The neighborhoods such as the Lower Ninth Ward never had rail transit before, so they obviously didn't get any now nor has there been the need for it since the area was not rebuilt.
One story that developed that year but has not come to its desired conclusion is the loss of Amtrak's Sunset Limited east of New Orleans, along the Gulf Coast, and into Florida. To this day we still get online communities passing meaningless resolutions saying they would like to see some form of intercity rail service fill this gap, but Amtrak shows little interest. Those stories begin in the above cited thread, but they also continue in various posts throughout the past ten years.
