Railroad proposes storage of former oil tankers in region

Saratoga & North Creek Railway plans to bring hundreds of out-of-service train oil and ethanol tank cars to the region to store them after they are taken out of service because of new federal safety regulations.

The cars would be stored on railroad sidings near the hamlet of Tahawus in Essex County, in a remote area near former stone quarries in the town of Newcomb.

Ed Ellis, president of the railway and its parent company, Iowa Pacific Holdings, informed leaders from Warren County and the town of Corinth — which own the rail line on which SNCRR operates — of the proposal Tuesday. He said he wanted to let the county and town know because residents will likely see the tankers heading north on the line in coming months.

EDITORIAL: Don't store crude oil tankers in Adirondacks

We want Saratoga & North Creek Railway to figure out ways to make money, but creating a toxic waste site in the heart of the Adirondack Park wasn’t what we had in mind.

The railway’s president, Ed Ellis, told Warren County political leaders on Tuesday the railway intends to store hundreds of tanker cars on miles of rail sidings it owns along the remote rail line that runs to Tahawus, in the town of Newcomb.

But we cannot support a plan to move toxic waste into the Adirondack Park, even in small amounts in the bottom of tankers and even if the arrangement is temporary.

NPR "Morning Edition," 9/14:

What To Do With Railroad Tank Cars That Are No Longer Safe Or Economical?

New safety regulations and a slump in oil prices means tens of thousands of railroad tank cars are being taken out of service. Railroads are scrambling to find space to store unwanted oil trains.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

The oil industry and railroads are scrambling to answer a question. It's what to do with thousands of useless, old tank cars. They're no longer considered safe or efficient to operate. Many of these tank cars are crusted with oil, sludge and heavy metal. So what do you do with them? Railroads found an answer, and some people are not going to like it. Here's Brian Mann of North Country Public Radio.
