  I made so many mistakes on my first long-distance train ride that I flew back home. Here are 12 things I wish I'd known before I left.    

 

 

A random TikTok video influenced me into boarding the Amtrak Coast Starlight, a famous passenger train that runs between Los Angeles, California, and Seattle, Washington.

Of note is that the Coast Starlight does not go to downtown San Francisco.   And while its bus connection to San Francisco from Emeryville or Oakland is shorter than those which connect to Pacific Surfliner trains at Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo,  it's still a bus connection.   Amtrak does not market that there is an all-rail possibility, by changing at San Jose to CalTrain.
