This is directed to those MWRF participants who plan to be in Chicago the night of Monday July 20th and may be interested in a Mendota points run on the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg.

I know that a few of you did this points runs a couple of years ago (Jis, Dick and Alan).  I had planned to go, but got talked out of the points run in favor of pretending to watch FSU Football (and actually eating pizza and drinking beer) with my sister.  Somehow, Chris got roped into joining us, but I am not sure if he has done that points run at another time.

The points run will involve a late night after a long day.  According to the MWRF itinerary, the day ends at 4:29pm at LaSalle St. Station.

Train 383 (Illinois Zephyr) leaves CHI at 5:55pm and arrives in Mendota at 7:20pm.

Train 382 (Carl Sandburg) leaves Mendota at 8:11pm and arrives in CHI at 9:53pm.

I am considering doing this points run.  I probably could be talked into it or out of it at this point.  Any comments or PMs would be appreciated.  Thanks.  :)

LaSalle Street Station to Union Station is probably about a 10-15 minute walk.

For me, Monday is the middle day of my total vacation time, so I have to do laundry that evening.  And a hotel transfer too.   So have a good time but you can count me out as I need to remain in Chicago.

I've done that. I'll go unless some crisis pops up.

Steve, I have heard that there are places to eat in Mendota (if one is quick).  Is that correct?

2 places that come to mind looking at google maps are a BBQ place and a pizzeria down the street. nether are open on mondays. There is a place called the waterfall across the street but no website. Only places I see are a family dollar etc.

Main Street Station Bar and Grill is across the street, but may be closed on Monday also.  Their website is confusing.  http://www.mainstree...m/Home_Page.php

Also Waterfalls Casual Dining and Cocktails is directly across the street and appears to be open on Mondays.  http://www.tripadvis...a_Illinois.html

I've never eaten in mendota. I usually eat on union station or on the train.

Ah, the famous Mendota turn. We did that once before on another goroup affair in Chicago, I forget which. Worst case, there is a pizza place two blocks from the station. We needed a real quick turn that time due to train delays and such, and the pizza place was able to handle us, barely. A proper sit down meal would have been impossible. But this time might be better. I will most likely join such a points run.
