Warm weather likely cause of Durango & Silverton train derailment

Another derailment occurred the same day

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad derailment late Saturday afternoon was the second worst incident in more than 30 years, and the second in one day on the tracks.

The train was returning from Silverton when two passenger cars came off the rails around 4:30 p.m., likely because warm weather damaged the rails, railroad spokesman Christian Robbins said Monday.

SNIP

Former train engineer Greg Cravatta was on the first car when it started to shake and vibrate and he realized it had derailed.

“I thought, ‘My god, Don’t tip over, don’t tip over,’” he said.

Cravatta shouted at the brakeman to pull the air brake. “He pulled that air brake immediately, and we stopped, and it was no big deal,” he said.

Heat causes popular Colorado attraction to temporarily shut down

DURANGO, Colo. – Colorado wasn’t left out of above-average temperatures last week, and one popular tourist attraction was taken off track for a time because of it.

Temperatures were in the 90s Saturday when a train car on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad came off the rails.

Likely at fault? The heat.
