WMATA news release, 12/22:

Replacement of 6 Woodley Park escalators to begin January 5

On January 5, Metro contractors will begin a major capital project to install six new escalators at Woodley Park Station. The project is part of Metro’s plan to replace more than 130 of the system’s oldest escalators to improve reliability.

With a vertical rise of 102 feet, the entrance escalators at Woodley Park are the longest in the District of Columbia and the third longest on the Metrorail system (behind Wheaton and Bethesda). The current escalators entered service when the station opened in 1981.

Woodley Park Station’s entrance is served by a total of six escalators, three short units and three long units.

During the project, Metro’s contractor, KONE, will take two escalators out of service at a time – one short and one long.  Each pair of escalators will require approximately 46 weeks for preparation, demolition and removal of the existing escalators, construction work, installation of the new escalators, testing and inspections.

The remaining four escalators will remain available for customer use.

The station will remain open to customers throughout the project, which is expected to run through mid-2018.  Customers travelling to the National Zoo may wish to consider using Cleveland Park Station as an alternate to Woodley Park. Cleveland Park Station is a short, downhill walk to the Zoo.

Throughout the project, Metro Transit Police, emergency management, rail supervisors and escalator technicians will be at Woodley Park Station at all times the system is open to monitor conditions and respond to any disruptions.

In the event of a service disruption that causes Woodley Park to become crowded, the station may be temporarily closed for safety reasons. Riders are encouraged to consider their alternate routes in advance. Alternates include using Cleveland Park Station, which is located 0.8 miles north on Connecticut Ave., NW, using regular Metrobus service, or taking Circulator to Columbia Heights Station.

WMATA news release, 11/20:

Metro opens two brand-new escalators at Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan

Metro today placed in service two new escalators at Woodley Park-Zoo Adams Morgan Station, the system's 35th and 36th new escalators since 2011.

The two new escalators are the first of six that are replaced, two-at-a-time, as part of a multi-year project that began in January.

“The escalators at Woodley Park have been in service since 1981 and are the longest in the District of Columbia; third longest on the Metrorail system," said Metro Deputy General Manager Rob Troup. "Projects like these have helped us raise escalator availability to its highest level in years."

Work will begin immediately to install another pair of new escalators at the station.  Each pair of escalators requires about 46 weeks for preparation, demolition and removal of the existing escalators, construction work, installation of the new escalators, testing and inspections.

The station will continue to remain open to customers throughout the project, which is expected to run through mid-2018.

Since 2011, Metro has installed 36 new escalators at the following stations: Bethesda, Branch Avenue, Brookland, Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle, Pentagon, Van Ness, Georgia Ave-Petworth, Glenmont, Columbia Heights, Friendship Heights, Metro Center and Mt. Vernon Square.

WMATA news release 6/2/17 (late post):

Metro completes major escalator replacement project at Woodley Park; set to begin new project at Cleveland Park

IMG_0368_1.JPG Metro today completed a major capital project to replace six escalators at Woodley Park Station, including the three longest escalators in the District of Columbia.

Metro's contractor, KONE, replaced the escalators two at a time in succession. The overall project took more than two years to complete, including site preparation, demolition and removal of the old escalators, installation of complex gantries and cranes to move the new escalators and supporting structures into place, as well as testing and tuning.

"Metro's infrastructure is aging and this is another example of the kind of investment that is needed across the system to provide customers with good, safe and reliable service," said Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld. "Before being replaced, these escalators were more than 30 years old and beyond their useful life. With these brand-new escalators customers will see the improvement."

With the completion of the escalators at Woodley Park, construction will begin Monday, June 5, to replace five entrance escalators at Cleveland Park Station. The project is expected to take 20 months to complete. The station's elevators will remain in service for the duration of the project.

Since 2011, Metro has replaced 75 escalators and has rehabilitated more than 150 to like-new condition resulting in greatly improved escalators. During the first three months of 2017, Metro's escalator availability score reached 95 percent, exceeding Metro's target and a six year high of 93.5 percent set last year.

Metro's escalator availability is measured by the amount of time each of Metro's 618 escalators are in service during operating hours and includes those escalators out of service due to inspection, repair, rehabilitation or replacement.
