This is for discussion of meals in the host cities where we will be spending time in between our Amtrak trips.   Note that it may be worthwhile as discussion gets going to replace this thread or link to new ones with separate discussions for each city.   But in summary, here is what we will need to discuss.  As almost always, we usually have breakfast at our respective hotels before our rail activities begin.

New Orleans

Arriving Thursday evening and departing Saturday morning, we only have to worry about Friday's lunch and dinner.   Right now I have no ideas on either one. As I've said in another thread, with the Riverfront Streetcar not running between Canal and Julia, it likely lets out eating lunch where we did in 2011, at what is now the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, unless people want the long walk through the mall which I doubt as we're all 7 years older than we were then.  Dinner too needs to be worked on.  Last time most of us went to the Harrah's Casino buffet (which IS convenient to most streetcar lines).

Houston

Depending on whether we get dinner on the train or not, there's Saturday evening after arrival.  On Sunday, during our scheduled travels, I now have us stopping for lunch at a shopping district north of town called Northline Commons.  Good selection of various known chain places there.   Dinner I suppose somewhere downtown after conclusion of our light rail travels.   And then there's Monday, which would be a rest or sightseeing day where folks can have lunch wherever they might be.   Dinner again would depend on whether people will be having dinner aboard the Sunset Limited.

San Antonio

An off day was scheduled here to ease the pain of an overnight scramble or sleepless night.  So on Tuesday while sightseeing or whatever you choose to do, there's lunch and dinner.  I suspect folks will want to retire early due to the 7 AM scheduled departure the following morning - but if we can agree upon a location to dine together that is not out of the question.

Austin

On Wednesday, lunch midday, somewhere downtown.  Dinner after our MetroRail trip, also someplace downtown. To be determined.

As always, I will be glad to help with the Dining plans.  New Orleans is challenging in that many of the restaurants are cajun or focus on sea food.  I will parse the yelp reviews and menus to find a place that has a variety as well as quality.

Penny, I suspect New Orleans will be challenging for you on some levels, but provide some opportunities too.  Let me know what you think of my efforts.

Houston will be interesting.  I do not know much about it.  I suspect it is a lot like Dallas with a focus on Barbecue and steak.

Though I will not be in San Antonio for Dinner, I will be glad to help.

Thanks Steve.  New Orleans will be very challenging for me, and I realize that fact.  When planning the group meal, keep the group in mind and not me.  I already mentioned to Kevin that I am OK eating alone if the restaurant chosen by the group will not be able to accommodate my eating issues.  I will do some research also and share with you.

I would like for you to be included. Please text or pm me your dietary needs. I remember some but not others. If I know in advance that limits the potential for you being left out or put on the spot.
