Feds 'committed' to Chicago-Quad Cities passenger rail

WASHINGTON – The federal government remains committed to passenger rail service between the Quad-Cities and Chicago, according to Thursday testimony in a U.S. House of Representatives committee meeting.

"We have worked closely with the state and the railroads on that route," said Paul Nissenbaum, Associate Administrator of Railroad Policy and Development for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration.

"(For) a portion of it, we've been able to get those investments in place. When we've hit the short line (railroad) territory, things have been a little more difficult. But we're working through that with the state and you have our commitment to continue working with the state on it."

Quad City Times, 2/15/18:

Trump budget proposes to cancel Iowa passenger rail funds

The Trump administration’s fiscal year 2019 budget proposes cancelling $53.4 million in passenger rail money, with the bulk of it likely coming from funds set aside for a connection between Moline and Iowa City.

The proposal hasn’t become law yet, but if it does it would mean the loss of a chunk of federal money that could possibly be used as a down payment on construction.
