The future of Amtrak passenger rail service is still hanging in the balance after city leaders in Mobile postponed their vote Tuesday morning.

   Amtrak popular in polling, but is that enough in Mobile?   

 

 

In 2016, Donald Trump secured a whopping 62% of the Alabama vote during the presidential election.

 

In 2018, Kay Ivey won the Alabama gubernatorial race with 60% of the vote. The electorate sent a message that was “loud and clear,” she said.

 

But both outcomes pale in comparison to the public support Amtrak generally seems to generate in poll after poll on the Gulf Coast and beyond.

  Amtrak to span the Coast after Mobile votes to allow rail service  



 

Plans for a rail service that runs from New Orleans to Mobile with stops along the Mississippi Gulf Coast will proceed.



 

Mobile City Council met Tuesday to vote on the much-debated issue after tabling it last week for more discussion.

   Mobile hops aboard Amtrak support by endorsing Gulf Coast rail commitment  

 

 

With a 6-1 vote Tuesday, the Mobile City Council hopped on board with its support of Amtrak service by committing around $3 million starting in the year 2023 so that passenger trains can run between the Port City and New Orleans.

More money has been awarded to restoring a passenger rail service between New Orleans and Mobile, Mississippi’s U.S. congressmen announced Friday.

Passenger trains haven’t run between Mobile and New Orleans for almost fifteen years. Plans to restore service got a recent boost with the announcement of more than five million dollars in funding.

Mayor Pete could be headed to Mississippi.



Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana and 2020 presidential candidate, was recently tapped by President Biden for the job of Secretary of Transportation.
