1 dead, 5 injured as train carrying members of Congress hits truck in Virginia
A train carrying members of Congress heading to a retreat in West Virginia has hit a truck, Republican lawmakers have said.
WASHINGTON — A chartered train carrying dozens of GOP lawmakers to a Republican retreat in West Virginia struck a garbage truck south of Charlottesville on Wednesday morning.
At least one person was killed and another was seriously injured, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders.
And four people on board the train suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital including two Amtrak crew members and two passengers, Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said.
A train traveling from D.C. hit a vehicle that was on the tracks about 11:20 a.m. in Crozet, Woods said.
The National Transportation Safety Board was sending investigators to the scene.
Rep. Jason Lewis’ staff said that he was taken to the hospital to be checked out for a possible concussion.
Other lawmakers said they believed the person who was killed and the other who was seriously injured were in the garbage truck.
“Helped the two people in the garbage truck who are now in the ambulance. They are injured badly,” Rep. Roger Marshall, a doctor, tweeted.
