I have grown somewhat fond of Raleigh and Greensboro after a few weekend mileage runs. As it turns out, the run from Orlando to Raleigh on 92 involves no meals on 92 if planned properly. And I am now very familiar with some really good eateries in Raleigh, and one or two even in Greensboro that are easily reached from the respective stations. So I will most likely do the shuffle in NC.

I agree with Penny.  I have been to both Greensboro and Raleigh stations.  Both are nice, but the

midnight change is unattractive to me.

Although he did not specially say it, I believe Shanghai is also OK with 2 nights in San Antonio.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

The nature of this trip given the train schedules calls for several daytime-only segments on long distance trains.   That includes New Orleans-Houston, Houston-San Antonio, and San Antonio-Austin (the latter only about 2-1/2 hours).   Because of this, and assuming we are a go for 2 nights in San Antonio, that produces a total of 7 nights in hotels... 2 in New Orleans, 2 in Houston, 2 in San Antonio, and 1 in Austin.  Just something to keep in mind when deciding to attend, or whether to attend only a portion of the long journey.

The hotels don't necessarily come cheap, and at least in the case of New Orleans, there must be something going on in town as the intended Friday night has many properties already sold out (or else we are running into a temporary room blocking situation that we saw  in other cities on previous summer Fests).  Availability of affordable hotel rooms may drive which dates are ultimately chosen, as there may be more such availability if we shifted one week earlier or later.

At the same time, Amtrak segments have to be worked in, in between those hotel stays.   It's going to take some research to pull all this together, and there needs to be some patience as the pieces of the puzzle come together to create the best itinerary for our summer event.

I cannot find the revised itinerary that you posted for this trip. Where do I look?

There is a good reason you could not find the latest revision, and that is because I never made it public until now.  We're up to the Blue Itinerary now, and it includes the added night in San Antonio, with everything from there to Chicago shifted ahead 1 day.   What is not totally decided yet is the actual dates (could be one week or another).  In my very little spare time I'm trying to work out availabilities on Amtrak and hotels between the two weeks.   Hopefully an official announcement will come within the next week or two.
