Continue.Man saves driver from train collision
On Tuesday afternoon, Steve Skolozynski, 43, probably saved at least one life, although the recipient may not know it.
Skolozynski was driving north on Des Plaines River Road from his job in River Grove to his home in Chicago. It had been snowing much of the afternoon and traffic was moving slow.
At about 4:45 p.m. he arrived at the railroad tracks at Belmont Avenue. Someone had knocked down the wooden crossing gate.
"It was lying on the track," Skolozynski said. "People were just driving over it."
Skolozynski was about to do the same when the car ahead of him, a white late-model Volkswagen, got stuck on the tracks.
