South Coast business leaders said Monday that they want a decision by the end of 2016 on the routing for proposed commuter rail service to Fall River and New Bedford.

Improvements to the railroad lines in the city completed over the last few years are not good enough for commuter trains, city officials say.

South Coast Rail Public Meeting Schedule
BOSTON - The MassDOT and the MBTA will host a series of public meetings beginning next month on the proposed restoration of passenger rail service between the South Coast and Boston.
Designers are considering a new connection making use of the existing MBTA Stoughton Commuter Rail Line. The design for this route is currently 15 percent complete. In addition, MassDOT and the MBTA are also considering an alternative rail route between Boston and the South Coast that could potentially be designed and constructed more quickly than the Stoughton route. The meetings will be held to inform the public on the status of the project, discuss next steps, and seek public comment.
Public meetings all begin at 6:30 p.m. and are scheduled as follows:

Greater New Bedford Vocational High School Auditorium

Monday, September 12th, Taunton

Dickering over what route South Coast Rail should follow is definitely delaying this whole project. The latest thought is to combine it with eventual commuter rail service to Cape Cod (rather than run as an extension of current Stoughton service), or run a shuttle train between Middleborough and Cape Cod, which in my opinion will be a negative factor for ridership.

A commuter rail line with service to New Bedford and Fall River could be complete by 2024.
Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation filed a notice on Wednesday advancing the project, which is likely to cost several billion dollars.

South Coast Rail will incorporate “Middleborough Route”
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is planning to construction the South Coast Rail project in two phases, beginning with the Middleborough Route.
