The idea of riding trains to get to Las Vegas, and get around once you’re here, isn’t really new.

But it seems recently like everybody’s talking about it more.

Definitely, Las Vegas needs a link to the airport either by monorail or LRT.

Definitely, Las Vegas needs a link to the airport either by monorail or LRT.

And just in general to get around.

The questions have to be, would it go right up and down the Strip? Would it replace the monorail or run in addition to it? Because the monorail now runs behind the hotels on the east side of the Strip, it is useless to those west of it. Either another monorail is needed for the west side, or a light rail line (probably New Orleans streetcar style given the number of stops) in the median of Las Vegas Blvd. could make both monorails a moot point.

But if it's also going to the airport, downtown, and other outlying areas, light rail is probably better than streetcar.

City exploring light rail commuting

LAS VEGAS -- The city of Las Vegas wants to know if you'd be interested in riding on a light rail system to work to avoid traffic backups.

The city is looking into commuting problems around the Las Vegas valley and a consulting firm has been hired to get community feedback.

Las Vegas has been dithering over light rail transit for over six years.  It's nice to note that the city is beginning to analyze rail transit options.

Transportation leaders talk light rail at Newsfeed session

Three transportation leaders say light rail should be a part of Southern Nevada's future, but it would only happen if the community is willing to raise sales taxes or a favorable public-private partnership could be established.

Is light rail feasible for Las Vegas? Two experts debate the question

As the former chairman of the Nevada Regional Transportation Commission and a guiding force behind such projects as the Desert Inn arterial and the 215 Beltway, which was named in his honor, Bruce Woodbury is a foremost expert on the transportation systems of Las Vegas. The former Clark County Commission chairman, who also played a key role in establishing the RTC bus system, has been called the father of Southern Nevada transportation.

Light rail key to ensuring visitors enjoy Las Vegas — and come back

When a big event such as a marquee fight or a major concert happens on the Strip, Las Vegas Boulevard turns into a gridlocked disaster of honking horns, grumbling tourists and the constant tick, tick, tick of taxi meters racking up heavy fares.
