AL.com, 6/8/19:

Ivey says questions remain before Alabama can commit to Amtrak’s Mobile return

Long-term financial commitments and the potential impact to the Port of Mobile are two concerns driving Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s hesitation on supporting a possible return of Amtrak to the Gulf Coast.

In a statement to AL.com Saturday, the governor said more information about the return of the passenger rail service to Mobile is needed before the state is willing to make a financial commitment.

Her comments come one day after the Southern Rail Commission and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., announced the award of a $33 million federal grant to make improvements to the coastal rail line in preparation for a return of Amtrak service within 24 months.

Rail advocates contend new Gulf Coast Amtrak service isn’t the Sunset Limited

When the transcontinental Sunset Limited last operated three-days-a-week voyages along the Gulf Coast 14 years ago, on-time performances and ridership numbers were both poor and stops into Mobile were often made late in the night.

Southern rail advocates say the revived New Orleans-to-Mobile route will be nothing like the Sunset Limited service that was interrupted when Hurricane Katrina wrecked the rail line in 2005. In fact, they say the new passenger service will be a first-of-its kind for the Gulf Coast.

Article is here.

“What you get for that is four trains a day, and I think that is one of the really important elements,” said Ross. “This isn’t the old Sunset. This isn’t even the old Gulf Wind that ran during the 1990s for about nine months. This is more of a service of what we see is really useable.”

Correction to the above:    The Gulf Wind was similar to the Sunset Limited in that it was an overnight train between New Orleans and Jacksonville, and was timed in both directions to transfer passengers to & from the Silver Meteor in Jacksonville.  But it was in the pre-Amtrak era in the 1960's being terminated upon the start of Amtrak in 1971.   They are talking about the Gulf Coast Limited, which ran in two different stints between New Orleans and Mobile, with the last one being cancelled in March of 1997.

Fox News, 6/19/19:

Amtrak attempting to revive Gulf Coast line more than a decade after Katrina

GULFPORT, Miss. - Despite decreased ridership, Amtrak is actively working to revive its northern Gulf Coast train service between New Orleans and Mobile, Ala. The service could prove to a real benefit for the region, but there are plenty of hurdles to overcome before the line materializes.

Amtrak’s initiative recently received $33 million in grant money from the federal Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program to help cover about half of the cost of the $65 million regional Gulf Coast line, which would run through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Amtrak service between New Orleans and Mobile has been non-existent for at least 14 years after Hurricane Katrina decimated the necessary infrastructure to keep such a line up and running.

Mobile hesitates on backing coastal Amtrak return

Mobile city officials put the brakes Tuesday to a resolution requesting that Gov. Kay Ivey “commit and insure” the funds necessary to return passenger rail to the Gulf Coast.
