Extreme winds blow 2 trains off tracks near Red Deer, Wainwright

Several cars from one train blown off trestle bridge by 'extremely strong winds,' according to police

 

 

RCMP are investigating two train derailments Tuesday in central Alberta caused by extreme winds. 

 

Three Hills RCMP officers were called at around 5:20 p.m. after 28 freight cars derailed near Huxley, Alta., approximately 75 kilometres by car from Red Deer.

At about 6 p.m., Wainwright RCMP were called to a train trestle near Township Road 542 for another reported train derailment.

 

Const. Leon Hoffman said five double-stacked cars were knocked off a trestle bridge near Fabyan by "extremely strong winds."

Extreme winds cause train derailment near Huxley in central Alberta

 

 

Extreme winds caused a train to derail in central Alberta Tuesday.

 

Crews from the Three Hills RCMP and fire department responded at around 5:20 p.m. to a derailment about 1.5 kilometres south of Huxley.

 

Police said 28 rail cars carrying 56 sea containers were blown off the tracks.

13 train cars derail off historic CN trestle bridge near Wainwright in central Alberta

 

 

The main Canadian National Railway line between Edmonton and Saskatoon was put out of service after 13 train cars derailed on the Fabyan trestle bridge near Wainwright, Alta., Tuesday afternoon.

 

 

CN Rail said the derailment happened at around 5:40 p.m., as a strong wind storm swept across the province.

 

CN said a set of wheels on a locomotive at the end of the train also derailed on the bridge, located about 14 kilometres west of Wainwright in east-central Alberta, but the locomotive itself remained upright.
