On Sunday, at about the 4th Quarter, Sound Transit posted an interesting piece on Facebook. They asked the Denver RTD, for advice on how to handle Super Bowl Victory Parade traffic, as this will be Seattle's first. (Super Bowl Victory that is, the Sonics won the NBA championship in 79, and the Metropolitans won the Stanley Cup in 1917)

Well, on a serious note, here is how the traffic for Wednesday's parade will be handled

Sounder commuter rail, with service to the north end of CenturyLink field, will be an attractive option for many fans attending the parade. Southline trains offer congestion-free service to and from Lakewood, South Tacoma, Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent and Tukwila. Northline trains serve Edmonds, Mukilteo and Everett.
Southline: Sound Transit will operate one additional round trip leaving Tacoma at 8:30 a.m. and returning from Seattle at 2:30 p.m. (note that this special trip is not able to serve South Tacoma or Lakewood). This is in addition to the six trains that depart Lakewood beginning at 4:41 a.m. and two additional trains that depart Tacoma at 7:25 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. The added Seahawks train will depart King Street Station at 2:30 p.m., followed by regular service at 3:12 p.m., 3:42 p.m., 4:12 p.m., 4:32 p.m., 4:52 p.m., 5:12 p.m., 5:42 p.m., and 6:12 p.m.
Northline: Four morning trips will depart Everett for Seattle at 5:45 a.m., 6:15 a.m., 6:45 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. Return trains in the afternoon will depart King Street Station at 4:05 p.m., 4:33 p.m., 5:05 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. The 7:15 a.m. and 4:04 p.m. north line departures will operate longer, five-car trains to accommodate larger than normal crowds. The 6:45 a.m. and 4:33 p.m. departures will run three-car trains.
Link light rail serves stops close to the stadiums and the parade route and will operate with service expanded to peak-hour levels throughout the morning and afternoon on Wednesday. Trains will leave stations approximately every 7.5 minutes. More information on Link is available at www.soundtransit.org. Link riders will have a new discounted parking option at Sea-Tac Airport where they park for $2 an hour all day and ride light rail downtown

It was a mess with the traffic for the Victory Parade. Then again, the two car pile-up blocking the northbound track caused a delay.

Link: Link will operate about every seven and half minutes throughout the day.

Sounder:

North:
Evening: Will operate its normal departure times out of King Street Station:
Departure times are 4:05, 4:33, 5:05, and 5:35 pm.
The 4:05 and 4:33 pm departures will have additional car trains to accommodate larger than normal crowds.
South:
Evening: Sound Transit will operate two additional trips departing Seattle making it 10 trips total:
2:30, 3:12, 3:42, & 4:12 pm – these trips will not service south Tacoma or Lakewood.
4:32, 4:52, 5:12, 5:42, 6:12, and 6:30 pm will service all stations.
Passengers on the regular #1509 train are advised to wait for the #1511 train to arrive at Tacoma at 5:24 if they need to continue to south Tacoma or Lakewood.
Pierce transit bus connectors will be available to meet 6:30 sounder passengers at Kent, auburn, Puyallup and summer stations.

It will be interesting to see what the final numbers for all modes was yesterday. The turnout for the parade was over 700,000, and the city population is only around 600,000.

Preliminary ridership numbers from Victory Parade traffic are in. According to a joint press release from the regional transportation agencies, it is interesting. 75,000 riders on LINK Light Rail alone, and 20,000 on SOUNDER Commuter trains. I can say, it sure looked like it on the ground. I was just trying to get to work, and waited 90 minutes for a train at Columbia City Station
Partly due to the accident, partly due to the crowd.

Sound Transit
Sound Transit marked its busiest day ever. Early estimates put regional train and bus ridership around 200,000. As more data is collected, it appears that number may grow. Average weekday ridership is typically around 105,000.

Link light rail services operated at maximum capacity into downtown Seattle from about 6 a.m. Southbound service remained full through the evening rush hours, pushing total estimated ridership to more than 75,000. Through a strong partnership with King County Metro Transit, Sound Transit put all available trains into service, with trains arriving at stations about every six minutes. During the afternoon Sound Transit for the first time deployed several four-car trains which can carry up to 800 passengers.

Sounder commuter rail carried somewhere around 20,000 passengers into downtown Seattle during the morning, and a similar number of return trips in the afternoon. To accommodate the unprecedented ridership the agency ran one extra southline Sounder train in the morning and two extra trains in the afternoon and evening. Some northline trains operated with extra cars into and out of downtown Seattle.

Morning Sounder service proved the most challenging, since many southline trains were full by the time they left Tacoma. One northline train was full by the time it reached Edmonds. Passengers endured long waits in the cold before they could board, and an unknown number were not able to board. Sound Transit worked with Pierce Transit, Metro and Community Transit to serve some of these riders on backup buses.

ST Express bus services into Seattle also ran at capacity throughout the day and into the evening rush hours, with Pierce Transit, Community Transit and Metro providing added buses and operators to help meet demand. While detail
