Federal officials say they will conduct their own tests on the Florida East Coast Railway's new locomotive horns during the first week of April.

Feds: Loud train horns to continue along U.S. 1

Those blaring train horns aren't going to go away – at least in the near future – for residents who live along the coastal tracks that run by U.S. 1.

The latest tests conducted by the Federal Railroad Administration confirmed the sound emitted from horns on the Florida East Coast Railway's new locomotives is within federal standards.

For now, the best hope for residents may come from the prospect of passenger trains running on the coastal tracks.

All Aboard Florida is spending $60 million to upgrade crossings from Miami to West Palm Beach with safety features as part of its plan to return passenger service to those tracks. The upgrades will make the crossings eligible to become quiet zones with horns silenced. The plan is to have the quiet zones in place before trains start rolling in late 2016.
