The tragic events along the Gulf coast have brought Hurricane Katrina
Evacuees to Norman, Oklahoma and they are using Amtrak as transportation to get their lives back in order. This morning, PassengerRailOk.org depot host Evan Stair assisted a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

"The 17 year old son of a family was traveling from Norman to New Jersey where his father lives as a part of the relocation," according to Stair, "We are just happy to assist with their travel needs and are glad Amtrak is still running in the state to assist with their transportation. We only wish there were more Amtrak service in the state that could get people where they need to go faster. We are continuing our grass roots campaign to see that Amtrak stays in the state for the good of people like this family that has suffered so much."

PassengerRailOk.org provides depot hosting for the city of Norman on weekend mornings, holidays, and when possible in the evenings. Their volunteer work began in August of 2001. "We are always looking for more volunteers to help as depot hosts," according to Stair who also is the Executive Director and Founder of PassengerRailOk.org, "We would like to provide evening openings for the city on a regular basis but need more volunteers."

PassengerRailOk.org is a grass roots organization dedicated to the
preservation and expansion of passenger rail in Oklahoma and the surrounding region.

PassengerRailOk.org volunteers also organized the successful April 2005 that saw the legislature pass HB1078, which appropriates $2 million for the continuation of the Heartland Flyer through FY2006. Another $1.9 million annual appropriation will be required beyond FY2006, which ends on September 30, 2006. If additional funding is not available on that date the Heartland Flyer will again face discontinuance.
