Hello Kevin,NM Rail Runner Express suspends servicebeginning Monday through April 3rdRail Runner to join other government agencies in minimizing human contact (Albuquerque, NM – March 16, 2020)Beginning Monday, March 16th, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express will suspend service through April 3rd.This decision comes as New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham today issued a directive to all state agencies to temporarily adjust, and in some cases suspend, certain functions in order to minimize public health risks in the wake of the COVID-19 public health emergency.“We must take into account that the Rail Runner carries people up and down a 100-mile corridor through central New Mexico every day”, said Dewey Cave, Executive Director of the Mid- Region Council of Governments. “It is our hope that by suspending service for at least the duration of the declared state of emergency that we help limit people’s exposure to the public health risk created by COVID-19.”“There is no indication that anyone’s contracted the virus through riding the train, or that we’ve transported anyone who has been infected”, said Terry Doyle, Director of Rio Metro Regional Transit District. “When service resumes, we will of course continue our extended measures of disinfecting and cleaning all train cars.”While the Rail Runner will not be transporting passengers for the next three weeks, testing and implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC) will continue in the corridor as scheduled. PTC is a $50-million federal safety enhancement designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, high-speed derailments and other catastrophic events on the railway. There are no plans at this time to suspend or curtail service provided by Rio Metro buses and shuttle services.
