Amtrak service between Phoenix and Tucson? Arizona gets grant for study
The potential for Amtrak service connecting Arizona's two largest cities just got a little more real.
There may be two things being conflated in these items. Obviously one is the return of the Sunset Limited to downtown Phoenix, eliminating the 30-mile trek to or from Maricopa on the transcon mainline. The other is more frequent service between the two cities of Phoenix on one hand and Tucson on the other. With the Sunset Limited alone and on its current timetable, the calling times to travel between the two cities are not that user-friendly. The two cities do lend themselves to a frequent multi-trip daily corridor.

GOP Sen. Jake Hoffman threatens to kill ADOT. You won't believe why
Let it be known that Sen. Jake Hoffman doesn’t like riding trains.
So much does he despise them that he’s willing to do away with the state agency that builds roads and maintains bridges and patrols highways.

Amtrak through Phoenix would allow residents to travel to Los Angeles by train
After almost 30 years, passenger rail service is inching closer to a return to the Valley.
Story
Fact check time:
The existing Amtrak rail line runs from Tucson to Yuma through Maricopa. Three trains a day run on it.
The Sunset Limited, the only Amtrak train in the area, runs three days per week, so the rate is not even one train a day.
