UPDATE: CSX Customer Advisory – CSX Activates Hurricane Operational Plan

October 5, 2016

CSX operations is continuing to monitor the path of Hurricane Matthew and has made extensive preparations for the effects of the storm.  The extent of the potential impact this system will have on CSX operations is not known at this time.  Several division operating departments are making tactical plan changes and curtailments to proactively move as much freight as possible to minimize the impact of possible delays.

The Hurricane Action Plan includes, but is not limited to, the following precautions and actions:

  • Operations on the main line from Auburndale, FL through Orlando, FL and Sanford, FL areas into Jacksonville, FL will be suspended by late Thursday afternoon.
  • The main line from Jacksonville, FL to Savannah, GA will be curtailed Friday morning.
  • The main line from Savannah, GA to Pembroke, NC has been reduced to passenger and time critical operations only.
  • Switching operations in Savannah, GA, Charleston, SC and Wilmington, NC have been halted until after the storm passes.

During this process, the company’s priorities are the safety of employees, infrastructure and meeting the needs of customers.  The CSX Customer Service Center will remain open throughout the duration of the storm to answer calls regarding individual customer issues.  We are working with customers to best accommodate requests in anticipation of storm-related disruptions to the rail network.  More updates will be provided as CSX continues to closely monitor the path and intensity of Hurricane Matthew which is predicted to significantly impact the southeastern United States coastline late this week and the Mid-Atlantic into the weekend.

  • Jacksonville to Savannah, GA
  • Augusta, GA to Savannah, GA
  • Rocky Mount, NC to Hamlet, NC

Commercial power for the main line from Savannah, GA to Pembroke, NC is not yet available. In response, engineering crews are deploying over 1,000 generators to power crossing gates, defect detectors and wayside signals. Additionally, crews are working through extensive washout conditions and flooded areas on our rail infrastructure across North and South Carolina while assessing the extent of damage on the following subdivisions:

  • Portsmouth – VA
  • Tarboro – NC
  • Parmele – NC
  • W&W – NC
  • Wilmington – NC
  • Andrews – SC
  • Georgetown – SC
  • Charleston – SC
  • Eastover – SC
  • Lane – SC
  • Orangeburg – SC
  • Creston – SC
  • Cross – SC

A timeline to resume full service to these subdivisions has not been determined at this time. CSX engineering will inspect these routes as soon as water levels recede to safe conditions and will provide an updated restoration schedule.

CSX Customer Advisory – CSX Continues Restoration in the Carolinas

October 19, 2016

CSX continues recovery efforts from the extensive impact of Hurricane Matthew in North and South Carolina. Several areas remain without commercial power and continue to have flooding and downed trees. CSX engineering crews are working to restore routes into Wilmington, NC and Tarboro, NC. These routes are projected to be restored by the end of the week. As a result, more than 1,400 cars are delayed due to residual storm effects with at least 54 locations using portable generators to operate signals, crossing protection and defect detectors.

We are working closely with customers to deliver delayed shipments as soon as possible. Some local customers in the region may not be able to be served until all tracks are restored to service. As always, our main priorities are the safety of our employees and meeting the needs of our customers.

The Daily Record, Dunn, NC 10/21:

Trains Still Impacted By Hurricane Matthew

Recovery efforts continue throughout the Southeast by crews from CSX railroad.

Dunn and Beson-area motorists have noticed a few delays to the company’s trains as they come through town on their way to other destinations. The delays are caused by trains running at a slower pace than usual because of damage to tracks.

According to CSX spokesperson Kristin Seay, it’s a problem not just in Dunn and Benson, but across the entire area affected by Hurricane Matthew.
