U.S. Secretary Elaine L. Chao today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (U.S. DOT) Build America Bureau will provide a $537.1 million Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) loan to the New York State Urban Development Corporation D/B/A Empire State Development (ESD) for the construction of the Moynihan Train Hall Redevelopment Project. The project aligns with the U.S. DOT’s mission to provide financial support for important infrastructure projects that have met the criteria for the TIFIA credit program.

The project will deliver critical improvements and expansions that will ease congestion and delays and facilitate future passenger demand. The Train Hall will benefit the entire North East Corridor (NEC) service area, as two-thirds of all NEC rail trips pass through Penn Station today.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Build America Bureau will provide a $537.1 million loan to the New York State Urban Development Corp. for the Moynihan Train Hall redevelopment project.

The loan was issued through the department's Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program.

The project calls for constructing a new train hall at the James A. Farley Post Office building across the street from New York City's Penn Station. The new hall is expected to relieve congestion at Penn Station, which is the busiest U.S. transportation facility, averaging 650,000 passengers each weekday.

The Moynihan Train Hall will serve as the arrival and departure station for all Amtrak passengers in New York City, USDOT officials said in a press release. In addition, the hall will include ticketing and other facilities for MTA Long Island Rail Road.

Construction under way on NY Penn expansion

More than a half-century after the cashed-strapped, bankruptcy-headed Pennsylvania Railroad demolished the original, spacious and beautiful Pennsylvania Station New York, selling the air rights to developers and leaving a largely maligned, overcrowded underground complex in its place, construction is finally under way to transform the former Farley Post Office Building, across Eighth Avenue from Penn Station, into a grand new train station.

Eleven escalators take you right down to the platforms. This is going to be a destination, I believe, in and of itself,” much like Washington D.C. Union Station became when it was overhauled in 1986.

When Penn Station opened in 1908, it was a magnificent Beaux Arts structure, but for a passenger station its interior was harsh and made pedestrian flow difficult (steep stairs etc).  Grand Central, on the other hand, had both beauty and functionality.  Engineer William Wilgus wisely foresaw the importance of  keeping people moving; and he, therefore, instructed architects Warren and Wetmore to include a series of ramps to enable speedy ingress and degrees to and from trains.  Fortunately, Moynihan will achieve similar effect through escalators—presumably wide enough for folks to trundle strollers and wheeled luggage.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo yesterday unveiled plans for a new Penn Station entrance to provide direct access to the MTA Long Island Rail Road's main concourse and MTA New York City Transit subways.

Situated at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, the entrance would be designed to accommodate tens of thousands of LIRR passengers each day. Crews will build new stairwells and three new escalators to improve the movement of passengers.

Meanwhile, Cuomo also announced the completion of the structure for the nearby Moynihan Train Hall's midblock skylight.

After starting construction last summerSkidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM)‘s reimagined Moynihan Train Hall is now beginning to take shape. Part of Governor Cuomo’s Empire Station Complex revamp of Penn Station, the old James A. Farley Post Office will be transformed into a crystal palace-esque boarding concourse with a 92-foot high skylight atop the 1913 building’s original steel trusses. CityRealty recently got an exclusive aerial look at how construction is progressing on the glass skylights ahead of the Train Hall’s anticipated 2020 opening.

Wow, Cuomo Announces Glorious New Penn Station Entrance Days Before Primary!

04d97567eimg_1321-jpg-web_gallery.jpeg

Within the last few days, Governor Andrew Cuomo has broken ground on a "historic" bit of Long Island Railroad track, divulged to an editorial board that he plans to "accelerate" the long-delayed East Side Access mega-project, and demonstrated the sturdiness of a new bridge span by walking on it. But on Thursday, the governor raised the stakes on his infrastructure walkabout to a whole new level, when he announced the construction of a "state-of-the-art" entrance to Penn Station. And not just any old entrance, but one of the MAIN entrances. Reminder: Cuomo is fending off a primary challenge from progressive candidate Cynthia Nixon on September 13th.

When complete, the exquisitely-rendered passageway, at 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, will make it easier for subway and LIRR commuters to enter (and exit!) the transit hub, though it's important to remember Cuomo says he has no control over the MTA, so who knows how this came together.  .  .  .

Renderings Reveal New Portal To Penn Station Opening In 2020

Like a mystical Stargate beckoning humankind into a spectacular new dimension or a fragrant Auntie Anne's, a new entrance coming to Penn Station next year will welcome weary explorers straight down to the Long Island Railroad concourse. Located at the corner of 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, the new "main entrance" is expected to open in 2020, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo, who made by far the biggest news splash in NYC today with the release of these renderings. 2020's gonna be a big year for Cuomo.

The new "East End Gateway," which is part of a $600 million renovation project, will give commuters a second way to directly access the LIRR concourse (the only other direct entrance to the LIRR level is at 34th Street).

Penn Station’s new main entrance gets fresh renderings

With a little more than two years to go before Penn Station is transformed into the brand-new Moynihan Train Hall, some new details about the revamp are being brought to light—specifically, new renderings and specs for an entrance at 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, which will function as the main entrance of the train depot.

The entry, to be known officially as the East End Gateway, will lead passengers into the Long Island Rail Road concourse via an open, airy atrium with three escalators. It will be “literally the first time you will have illumination and light in that concourse in over 50 years,” according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who unveiled new renderings at a press conference earlier today.

“Passengers will be able to come in that entrance and avoid the front of Penn Station, there will be less traffic and you’ll have access to the subway and the LIRR,” Cuomo said. “It will be a gateway to a world class facility. This is not a proposal—we are getting to work now.”

Penn Station’s Adored Tracks Bar to Close at Summer’s End

The 16-year-old bar is a favorite among commuters, and many fans are already mourning the impending closure

The popular commuter bar Tracks Raw Bar & Grill — known by its frequenters as Tracks Bar — will be one of several victims of a massive Penn Station construction project, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Construction on a new entrance to the transit hub will shutter ten businesses, including a Jamba Juice, a McDonald’s, and a Dunkin’ Donuts. But most of the outcry on social media has been about Tracks, a beloved bar with raw seafood that was a rare gem in the bustling station.

'Tracks,' popular Penn Station eatery forced to close by end of summer

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A popular eatery in Penn Station is forced to shut down by the end of summer due to construction.

Tracks Bar and Grill was given the notice to vacate by August 31st as work gets done on a new entrance.

"This is such a great location, great vibe," says customer Knute Salhus.

A great location and a great vibe is what customers want after a hard day at work, before their long commute home.
