From the News Observer:

The Triangle Transit Authority plans to pay a Japanese-Korean consortium $90 million to build 32 self-propelled diesel rail cars for a commuter train line scheduled to begin running in 2008.

The third point in the triangle is Chapel Hill, home of UNC. That would be a good passenger generator, so they should have mentioned it in the same sentence as Raleigh and Durham.

Nice to see that Philadelphia will have Rail Cars under Construction their again. Bad enough that we had to have foreign companies build the new cars, although Colorado Railcar has a good product, and they got in on this deal providing the drive systems. Looks the DMU market in the USA is underway now, with both Light Rail DMUs in New Jersey, and Commuter Rail DMUs in Florida and North Carolina now. Wished Sound Transit up here would look into these. II noticed that the artist's rendering of the new DMU for the TTA was a high platform only system.

Light Rail DMUs in New Jersey

NJ TRANSIT RiverLine's equipment came from Europe, Germany I believe.

Sorry forgot to mention that, and the O-Train's equimpment was made by Bombardiear.

I think their are markets all over the country for both Heavy and Light DMUs.

In the case of heavy DMUs, I like the Colorado Railcar unit, because it can pull standard unpowered coaches. Making it basically a locomotive that seats 90 passengers in addition to pulling coaches. I hope both UTS and CRC can get repeat orders for their vehicles. It might get Seimens and Bombardier to get hopping on their own Heavy DMU designs, assuming they have them.

From the News & Observer, 10/28/04:

TTA OKs $90 million rail-car bid

Trustees are warned to be suspicious of the winning bidder's exceptionally low offer

Rejecting the protest of an unsuccessful bidder, the Triangle Transit Authority agreed Wednesday to buy 32 rail cars for $90 million from a consortium of Japanese and Korean companies.

I would be worried about deceptively low offers. Perhaps they had insider information or something.

A local television station in Raleigh reported today that the Triangle Transit Authority's entire regional rail project may be dead, due to a lack of federal funding. No internet links are available as of yet, but when they are I will post them here.

The system was to have connected Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill with each other, as well as the Research Triangle Park.

As of this time, TTA's website does not relect anything wrong.

From Raleigh, NC News-Observer, 12/13/05:

Pa. senators try to keep TTA grant on time

Pennsylvania has some money riding on the Triangle Transit Authority's proposed 28-mile commuter train line.

So Sens. Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Republicans, have joined North Carolina's Elizabeth Dole in prodding the Bush administration to release the brakes on federal money for the $810 million project.

Story here.

Well here it is... From WRAL-TV, Channel 5 in Raleigh-Durham, NC, 12/14/05:

Lawmaker Says Triangle Rail Project Funding Is Cut

The future for the Triangle Transit Authority Rail Project doesn't look bright, according to one state leader.

State Rep. Russell Capps, R-Wake County, told WRAL that he received a phone call from NCGOP Chairman Ferrell Blount Wednesday indicating the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) rejected funding for the commuter rail.
