ReadNorfolk Southern train derails in Rhea County
A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern told Local 8 News that about 45 cars carrying coal derailed in Spring City, Tennessee on Thursday night. The train company said the train crew was not injured but that some of the cars were turned on their sides.

NS crews continue to make repairs to the route damaged by the derailment near Spring City, TN. on Thursday July 28th. NS will have planned track outages over the next several days to expedite the repairs and fully restore the route as soon as possible. Congested-related delays through the area can be anticipated over the next several days while speed restrictions, planned track outages and signal repairs continue. Additional outages may be required as repairs progress over the next several days.
Planned Outages
Sunday July 31st-Two planned outages:
- one (1) four hour outage
- one (1) two hour outage
Monday August 1st-
- four to five hour outage
Tuesday August 2nd-
- ten hour outage
Train service to/from Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Atlanta/Jacksonville will be affected. Customers should expect unit availability delays of 6-12 hours on the following trains:
Northbound Trains:
- 216-31 (Atlanta to Chicago Calumet)
- 282-30 (Jacksonville to Chicago Landers)
Southbound Trains:
- 223-29 (Kansas City to Atlanta)
- 223-30 (Kansas City to Atlanta)
- 285-28 (Kansas City to Jacksonville)
- 285-29 (Kansas City to Jacksonville)
- 285-30 (Kansas City to Jacksonville)
- 295-30 (Chicago to Jacksonville)
- 215-30 (Chicago to Atlanta)

Repairs at the Spring City, TN derailment site were completed earlier today following the derailment that occurred on Thursday, July 28th. However, minimal delays are expected through Saturday due to congestion, slow orders, track inspections and signal testing.
