Progressive Railroading, 7/13:

New Orleans RTA nears completion of North Rampart streetcar extension

New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) crews on Monday began the curb-to-curb asphalt overlay for the new North Rampart Street/St. Claude Avenue streetcar line. The work marks the end of construction on the 1.6-mile extension.

The overlay will occur one lane at a time, beginning with the inside travel lanes. The project communications team will work with businesses, residents and property owners along the corridor to inform them of parking lane closures and other impacts, RTA officials said in a press release.

This is the brochure showing service effective October 2, 2016. It includes a map of the system as it will exist then. Notice that the new Rampart Line will be an extension of the Loyola Avenue line (noted in yellow on the map), thus the Loyola Streetcar will no longer interline with the Canal and Riverfront routes. One will have to transfer where the new line crosses Canal. That explains why one of the improvements is additional cars on Canal and Riverfront -- to make up for the lost Loyola cars that will now head into the French Quarter on Rampart instead.

This means that if you arrive in New Orleans on Amtrak, you can no longer take a streetcar from Union Passenger Terminal directly to points along Canal Street except immediately where the two cross. One transfer will be necessary.

A few items of note from the new map resulting from the Rampart-St. Claude Line opening:

  • Loyola name is totally gone, despite the fact that the Rampart-St. Claude Line runs along that street to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal (NOUPT).
  • Transfers between the Rampart-St. Claude Line and one of the Canal Street lines are a must if you are going to a point near the Riverfront, to be where the lines cross at Canal/Rampart.  Anyone visiting New Orleans by Amtrak should take note that although there is now streetcar service at NOUPT, it may require two vehicles to get where you are going if not directly on the Rampart-St. Claude Line.
  • Since the former Loyola Line no longer goes to the Riverfront, it also no longer interlines with the Canal or Riverfront Lines,  Similarly, no Canal streetcars extend beyond the Harrah's stop on Canal onto the Riverfront Line.
  • The Riverfront Line, which on earlier maps was defined as going from French Market to John Churchill Chase even though most cars turn at Julia, is now shown with a Convention Center destination, which allows them to turn at Julia or John Churchill Chase and still be adjacent to the Convention Center.
  • The increase in service on the Canal and Riverfront Lines was done to mitigate the loss of former Loyola cars running through onto those lines.

Rampart-St. Claude streetcar extension study could move into slow lane

New Orleans transit officials have signaled they may pump the brakes on a study assessing whether to extend the Rampart-St. Claude streetcar line more than a mile in two directions, citing concerns the study is being paid for with money the city's Regional Transit Authoritycould use for other non-streetcar projects.

RTA: Streetcar expansion to Press Street "not a priority" at this time

During a somewhat contentious exchange at New Orleans Regional Transit Authority's (RTA's) monthly Board of Commissioners meeting, officials pushed back on the notion that a St. Claude Avenue streetcar expansion to Press Street — a project currently under environmental study — is among the organization's top priorities.

Interesting article.  What is now known as the Rampart/St. Claude Streetcar opened in 2 segments, Loyola first, and then the newest portion on the namesake streets.  The piecemeal nature was supposed to  continue, so that the line eventually would have ended up at French Market, the same place where the Riverfront Streetcar now ends (although I don't know if both would still end there, or the new line would have become a through route with Riverfront).

I have yet to see this line in operation, but that likely will change this summer.   I'd like to see if its ridership matches that found on the Canal Streetcar lines, or the iconic touristy St. Charles Streetcar.   But extending it to the Riverfront and French Market can only do it better.
