Metra news release:

Metra posts on-time performance rate of 95.6 percent for January

(February 15, 2017) - Metra in January posted an on-time performance rate of 95.6 percent, exceeding its goal for the 23rd consecutive month, and also exceeding the five-year average for the month of January of 93.4 percent.

Metra’s goal is to operate at least 95 percent of its trains on time. Like the rest of the U.S. commuter railroad industry, Metra considers a train to have operated on time if it reaches its final destination within five minutes and 59 seconds of its scheduled arrival.

“We are extremely proud that we again have exceeded our on-time performance goal,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “But we certainly won’t rest on our laurels —we know we can always improve and we will always strive to do so.”

In January, 751 of 17,171 trains were tardy by six minutes or more. The most common cause for delays was related to signal/switch failure. Weather, mechanical issues and track construction were other major causes of Metra train delays in January.

“We’re proud of our on-time performance record, but that doesn’t mean we don’t try to do even better each and every day,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “One of the ways we do that is to closely analyze our performance data so we can determine where there is room for improvement.”

In April, 557 of 16,602 trains were tardy by six minutes or more. The most common cause for delays was related to right-of-way accidents. Freight interference, signal/switch failure and track construction were other major causes of Metra train delays in April.
