LIRR news release, 4/11:

Buses to Substitute for Trains at Two LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch Stations on Saturday; Critical Work Needed to Advance ‘Double Track Project’ to Improve Capacity and Service

Customers to Use Buses to Reach Central Islip and Ronkonkoma Stations for 24 Hours

Buses will substitute for trains at two LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch stations all day Saturday, April 15, in order to allow crews to conduct critical work to advance the LIRR’s Ronkonkoma Branch Double Track Project, which will add increased train service, capacity and allow greater flexibility to minimize the impact of service disruptions along the branch.

The “Double Track Project” will add a second track to the 18-mile stretch from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma by the end of 2018.

The work on Saturday calls for installation of a new rail west of Central Islip and the removal of a temporary switch near Ocean Avenue in Ronkonkoma.

“Adding a second rail as part of the LIRR’s Double Track Project will bring enormous long-term benefits to Ronkonkoma Branch customers – it will increase capacity and reduce delays from incidents out of our control,” said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski. “But improving service requires us to temporarily impact service and we’ve worked hard to plan this one-day weekend outage so that it will impact the fewest customers possible.”

As a result of the work, buses will substitute for trains for 24 hours at Central Islip and Ronkonkoma on Saturday. Customers traveling to those stations should plan for up to an additional 39 minutes of travel time, or should consider using the Port Jefferson Branch or Montauk Branch as alternatives, or take advantage of free parking at Brentwood and Deer Park.

Details of the planned service change are summarized below. A complete train and bus schedule is available at this link: http://web.mta.info/...ilAndConcret...

Eastbound

Ronkonkoma Branch trains will operate on their normal Saturday schedules but will terminate at Brentwood, where customers will be able to connect with waiting buses that will travel to Central Islip and Ronkonkoma.

Customers should plan to add up to an extra 34 minutes of travel time. This change will be in place for the 21 eastbound trains that arrive at Brentwood from 1:25 a.m. through 11:21 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.

Trains that depart from Penn Station at 4:39 p.m., 5:39 p.m. and 6:39 p.m. (adding half-hourly service for those three hours), will terminate at Farmingdale without a bus connection.

The schedule for the connecting train to Medford, Yaphank, Riverhead, Mattituck, Southold or Greenport, is being adjusted accordingly so that customers will still connect with the 9:12 a.m. and 2:12 p.m. trains from Penn Station. That train will meet buses at Ronkonkoma and will depart 39 minutes after their regular departure times.

Westbound

Buses will depart from Ronkonkoma and Central Islip up to 34 minutes earlier than regularly scheduled train departure times, and will connect with trains at Brentwood that will operate to Penn Station on regular Saturday schedules. This change affects the 22 westbound trains that depart Brentwood from 12:57 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.

Trains that normally depart from Ronkonkoma at 10:05 a.m., 11:05 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. (providing half-hourly service for those three hours) will instead originate at Farmingdale at their normal times, without a bus connection.

In order to connect with buses at Ronkonkoma, trains from Greenport, Southold, Mattituck, Riverhead, Yaphank and Medford will depart 21 minutes earlier than normal. Customers will connect with trains that arrive in New York City 60 minutes later than normal.

Information for Neighbors

LIRR work crews plan to access the work site via the Sycamore Avenue cul-de-sac in Ronkonkoma starting as early as 10 p.m. on Friday. The roadway will remain open but neighbors may notice LIRR work vehicles and equipment traveling and parked in the area. At the conclusion of the work and the removal of the temporary switch, the sounds of trains passing through the region will be reduced.

Many Channels for Services Updates

Train and bus departure times are available at this link: http://web.mta.info/...ilAndConcret...

In addition to the timetable, information about this planned service change is available through the LIRR’s real-time service information sources:

Email and text message service updates – Customers are urged to sign up to receive the alerts by visiting MyMTAAlerts.com. To avoid unwanted messages, a user can tailor the messages to the specific branch, and the specific times of day.

MTA.info – The rail tab of the “Service Status” box at the left side of www.MTA.info is always the definitive source for the latest status for each branch, updated every minute. In addition, customers can visit www.mta.info/lirr to see special service notices in the upper center of the page.

@LIRR on Twitter – Twitter users can follow @LIRR to receive updates of a similar nature to the email and text alerts, shortened to fit Twitter’s format.

LIRR Train Time app – Customers who use the LIRR Train Time app will see up-to-the-minute status for each upcoming train at each station. As a caution, trains that start out their trips on time may experience delays en route.

The above communications channels can be accessed while at home or on the go. For customers who are located at stations, the LIRR will post the latest service updates on digital signs at station platforms and will make audio announcements over public address systems, and on-board announcements made by train crews.

For those who prefer the telephone, information is available from the LIRR’s Customer Service Center by calling 511, the New York State Travel Information Line, and saying: “Long Island Rail Road” Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the LIRR at 511.

Buses Will Substitute for Trains Between Midnight and 8 a.m.

As part of its Double Track Project to increase track capacity, service frequency and reliability on the Ronkonkoma Branch, as well as ongoing inspection and repair work for general reliability and safety, the Long Island Rail Road is conducting high-tech rail inspections, switch replacement and other track work between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 19.

The Double Track Project will improve service and reliability on the LIRR’s Ronkonkoma Branch, spur economic activity, provide hundreds of construction jobs and improve LIRR service to Long Island MacArthur Airport. The Double Track Project will dramatically reduce delays on the LIRR and enable more off-peak service in both directions.

The LIRR will perform track work between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma between midnight and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, timed to inconvenience the fewest number of customers possible. Among the work, switches will be replaced and track inspections will be performed using a specialized diagnostic car fitted with ultrasonic and induction test equipment. The equipment is designed to detect and repair internal rail defects not readily visible to the eye. Maintenance crews will follow the inspection train in order to conduct any necessary work, including repairs, immediately.

As a result of the work, buses will substitute for overnight trains in each direction between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma between midnight and 8:00 a.m. Four trains in each direction will be affected and some customers should plan for up to 50 minutes of additional travel time to their destinations.

There will be no effect on local traffic. Special bus and train timetables are available at this link:

http://web.mta.info/..._08-19-2017.pdf

Eastbound Summary

The four Ronkonkoma Branch trains that depart Penn Station at 12:14, 1:21, 2:53 and 4:43 a.m. on Aug. 19 will terminate at Farmingdale and connect to buses stopping at Pinelawn, Wyandanch, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Islip and Ronkonkoma. Buses are scheduled to depart Farmingdale 10 minutes after the arrival of the train from Penn Station.

Westbound Summary

The four trains that normally originate at Ronkonkoma during the scheduled work on Aug. 19 will be replaced by local and express buses at 11:55, 11:57, 1:21, 1:23, 2:55, 2:57, 4:46 and 4:48 a.m., with the local buses making stops at Central Islip, Brentwood, Deer Park, Wyandanch, Pinelawn and Farmingdale. LIRR news release 9/6/17:

Double Track Work on Two September Weekends Will Improve LIRR Service; Buses to Substitute for Trains at Wyandanch, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Islip and Ronkonkoma

During the weekends of Sept. 9-10 and 16-17, Long Island Rail Road crews will conduct critical work to advance the LIRR’s Ronkonkoma Branch Double Track Project, which will improve train service by allowing for half-hourly, off-peak service in both directions, increased reverse peak service, and greater flexibility to minimize the impact of service disruptions along the branch. As a result of this work, buses will substitute for LIRR trains at Wyandanch, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Islip and Ronkonkoma stations for those two 48-hour periods.

The Double Track Project is a $387 million infrastructure project, funded over two capital programs that will add a second track to the 18-mile stretch from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma by the end of 2018.

The LIRR will perform track work and crossing renewal from 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 8 to 4 a.m. on Sept. 11, along with switch installation work to be done between Carl’s Path Road and Commack Road in Deer Park. On Saturday, Sept. 9, signal equipment will be relocated at Straight Path and 18th Street, during which periodic single-lane closures may be implemented while equipment is moved, to be completed by 4 p.m. LIRR crews will continue to test signal equipment at these two crossings through Sunday, Sept. 10; while crossing gates may be activated sporadically during this time, no traffic detours will be required for that leg of the work.

From 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15 through the late afternoon on Sunday, Sept. 17, workers will install a new switch west of the Deer Park Station, the first of two switches to be installed on the Main Line to create a new universal interlocking in Deer Park. This work, being done in an industrial area 2,000 feet east of the Commack Road grade crossing north of the Tanger Outlet parking lot, will not impact any roadways. More work will be done from around 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, to be completed by that afternoon, to relocate an existing signal grade crossing hut at Little East Neck Road to the north side of the tracks to make room for the new second track to be on the south side of the existing line. Tests will be performed on the grade crossing equipment at Little East Neck Road through Sunday, Sept. 17. MTA Police will be at the scene to guide traffic for possible single-lane road closures while the hut is lifted to the north side.

On these two weekends, the last arriving train Saturday morning at Farmingdale before the start of construction work will be the 12:48 a.m. from Ronkonkoma. Service on this stretch of track following the weekend work will resume on both Monday mornings at 12:46 a.m., with departures at both Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma stations.

The 4:39 p.m., 5:39 p.m. and 6:39 p.m. trains from Penn Station, as well as the 10:05 a.m., 11:05 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. originating in Ronkonkoma, will not be running on these weekends.

Customers traveling to or from the affected stations on the scheduled work weekends should plan for up to an additional 44 minutes of travel time, or should consider using the Babylon Branch or Port Jefferson Branch, with half-hourly service, as alternatives.

Details of the planned service change are summarized below. A complete train and bus schedule is available at this link: http://web.mta.info/...10_and_09-16...

Eastbound

Customers for Pinelawn, Wyandanch, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Islip and Ronkonkoma will board a bus at Hicksville for the balance of their trip. Customers should expect up to 44 minutes of additional travel time.

Greenport Service: Eastbound customers traveling to Medford, Yaphank, Riverhead, Mattituck, Southold or Greenport should board the 8:12 a.m. and 1:12 p.m. trains from Penn Station one hour earlier than normal for Hicksville and detrain for buses to Ronkonkoma, where normal train service will resume. Passengers boarding at all stations from Farmingdale through Central Islip will board a local bus for Ronkonkoma, to connect with the normal train service to the North Fork. Eastbound Bethpage customers traveling to Greenport will board trains at 9:01 a.m. or 2:01 p.m. for Farmingdale and transfer to local buses, or board an express bus to Ronkonkoma at Hicksville.

Westbound

Customers traveling from Ronkonkoma Central Islip, Brentwood, Deer Park, Wyandanch or Pinelawn should board a bus to depart up to 44 minutes earlier than normally scheduled train times bound for Hicksville, where train service resumes.

Greenport Service: Customers traveling from Greenport, Southold, Mattituck, Riverhead, Yaphank or Medford to points west of Ronkonkoma will detrain at Ronkonkoma and board buses 21 minutes later for Hicksville, where train service will resume. Passengers will arrive at western terminals one hour later than normal. Passengers traveling to Central Islip through Bethpage will board a local bus at Ronkonkoma to their final destinations.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the Long Island Rail Road Double Track has reached a major milestone and the final five miles of rail being laid this month. The project utilizes Design-Build construction and a specialized New Track Construction machine that lays rail more than 10 times faster than the MTA has ever done before, saving more than $7 million in construction costs and allowing for an expected project completion of August 2018 - 16 months ahead of schedule. Once complete, the Double Track, extending from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma, will dramatically reduce delays on the LIRR and enable more off-peak service in both directions by adding nearly 13 miles of parallel track.

While touring the Double Track, Governor Cuomo also announced 24 LIRR projects totaling $1 billion - including the $121 million Hicksville Station Transformation and the new Wyandanch Station - will be completed in 2018. Twenty-one additional LIRR projects will break ground this year, including the $2 billion LIRR Expansion Project that will add a third track to 9.8 miles along the congested Main Line of the LIRR between Floral Park and Hicksville. Together, these projects significantly advance the Governor's $6.6 billion transformation and modernization of the Long Island commuter rail and $100 billion Infrastructure and Development Plan for New York.

"For decades, leaders have talked about adding a second track to the Ronkonkoma Branch and today we are moving a major step closer to getting it done," Governor Cuomo said. "By pairing design-build contracting with the use of innovative track-laying equipment, we are building a more robust infrastructure faster and at less expense to New Yorkers. This project, along with the 23 other commuter line projects we will complete this year, will ensure LIRR remains the backbone of the region's economy."

Double Track

The $387.2 million Double Track project, which is bringing a second track to single-track territory, has provided hundreds of construction jobs and, upon completion, will improve service and reliability on the LIRR's Ronkonkoma Branch, while spurring economic activity, and improving LIRR service to Long Island MacArthur Airport. Over the past 25 years, ridership on the Ronkonkoma Branch has doubled - growing in popularity since the line was electrified in 1988.

With just one track along most of the 18-mile route between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma, the LIRR can operate only a limited number of trains and lacks operational flexibility in the event of a disruption. If one train becomes disabled, all other trains - coming from both east and west - have no way around the problem.

The new Double Track will enable the LIRR to provide more frequent off-peak service to the Ronkonkoma Branch in both directions, with off-peak service going from one train every hour to one train every 30 minutes in both directions. The project will reduce delays associated with service disruptions for the 48,000 weekday riders on the Ronkonkoma Line by giving the railroad flexibility to go around obstacles that it cannot currently in single-track territory.

The project has taken place over two phases. Phase One used the New Track Construction machine to lay the first 3.5 miles of new track between Central Islip and Ronkonkoma, and was completed in August 2016. Phase Two includes laying the rest of the track between Farmingdale and Central Islip. Over the next several months, crews will continue construction that includes stone ballast, tamping, surfacing, and installation of the third rail and new signal system.

New Track Construction Machine

The Double Track project marks the MTA's first-ever use of the New Track Construction machine, which is capable of laying one mile of track per day - more than ten times faster than the 500 feet of track per day that the MTA manually laid previously. By speeding up this process, the MTA is significantly improving productivity, increasing safety and reducing the potential of construction disruption to local communities. The machine is pulled from the front end by a bulldozer along the route of the new track. It automatically handles the flow of materials, negating the use of overhead cranes for track construction. The machine's ability to bring in supplies by rail negates the need for trucking supplies in. The MTA plans to use the machine in future projects in response to the Governor's challenge to increase efficiency in its projects.

MTA Chairman Joseph J. Lhota said, "The Double Track Project is a crucial piece of the many current infrastructure initiatives that bolster MTA's commitment to deliver better service and more capacity, while limiting service disruptions and delays. By having this second, parallel track on our Ronkonkoma Branch, customers traveling both eastbound and westbound throughout all times of the day will see the benefits this project brings."

MTA Chief Development Officer Janno Lieber said, "The MTA is always looking to adopt state-of-the-art practices when it comes to new construction projects. Our deployment of the New Track Construction machine shows that with innovative thinking, projects can be completed ahead of schedule with cost savings in the millions. We will use this same approach when it comes to other major infrastructure projects the LIRR is taking on, like the LIRR Main Line Expansion Project, to deliver the capacity customers need as quickly and cost-efficiently as possible."

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said, "The Governor's commitment to invest billions of dollars into the expansion of LIRR stations and tracks is the leadership Long Island has been waiting on for years. By addressing travel congestion and safety concerns, and focusing our efforts on reducing and eliminating travel delays - this significant undertaking will transform the way Suffolk County residents commute across the island and to the City. I thank Governor Cuomo for recognizing the need to tackle this infrastructure challenge and look forward to the creation of hundreds of new construction jobs for men and women throughout our community as these projects move forward this year."

Long Island Association President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin S. Law said, "I am proud to support the Governor's efforts to transform the way our residents commute.  This administration's investments in LIRR enhancements are critical to the safety of riders, workers and visitors - and by expanding tracks and offering more off-peak service in both directions, we are truly laying the groundwork for easier travel and an improved quality of life for everyone. I look forward to our residents securing well-paying jobs on-site and helping New York complete these massive projects to ensure a better, stronger Long Island for all."

SMART Transportation Division General Chairman Anthony Simon said, "New York knows that in order to provide the best service for all passengers, investments in safety and capacity are crucial. I am thrilled Governor Cuomo has committed historic funding to the modernization of LIRR stations and expansion of tracks to deliver more efficient, expanded service to residents and visitors. Once complete, these projects will help our conductors, service attendants, and track repair workers ensure the highest quality service is provided to everyone."
