Japan Today, 11/16/17:

Tokyo train company apologizes for 20-second-early departure

Japanese trains are awesome for a number of reasons, not the least of which is how amazingly punctual they are. But on Tuesday, a train on the Tokyo-area Metropolitan Intercity Railway Company’s Tsukuba Express line failed to stick to its timetable.

Japanese rail company apologises after train leaves 20 seconds early

It was an admission that would no doubt raise a sardonic smile among many commuters, and perhaps have them dreaming of relocating to Japan.

The operator of a private railway firm that serves the Tokyo suburbs has issued an apology after one of its trains departed 20 seconds ahead of schedule.

I just got in from Spokane, and Train 7 Empire Builder was an hour early, No need to apologize. With Japanese Railways I can see why, they pride themselves on punctuality.

End of line is a little different than where people have to board.  With Amtrak's practice of padding, if they are either exactly on time or just a little late, they can come into the end destination station "early" because the padding to make them look better wasn't needed.
