From Empire State Passengers Association (ESPA), newsletter for March/April 2006:

New York State DOT has released its plans to improve rail service along the Hudson Valley between New York City and Albany. The study it did examined commuter, intercity, and freight rail. The near-term projects to be done between now and 2009 include:
  • New high capacity signal system for shorter headways between trains between Croton and Poughkeepsie.
  • Mini high-level platforms at Hudson, which would also get a second track.
  • Move Poughkeepsie yard tracks to the east side of the mainline; new yard would have capacity for 15 trains. Three miles of third track to be added.
  • New 80 mph crossover at Hyde Park.
Mid-term projects, to go into effect between 2010 and 2014, will be:
  • Double track Harlem River bridge at Spuyten Duyvil.
  • Add pocket track and crossovers at Tarrytown to let trains turning there to get off the mainline.
  • New crossovers to be installed at Tivoli and Castleton.
Longer term projects:
  • 7 miles of new third track between Cold Spring, Beacon, and New Hamburg.
  • New two-mile third track and crossovers in the Stuyvesant area to allow waiting space for freights going to and from the CSX Hudson River Bridge.
More improvements for Rensselaer:
  • Add 4th platform and track.
  • Extend current platforms to accommodate longer trains.
  • Expand yard capacity.
  • Provide power switches for wye and freight bypass.
Amtrak is offering a discounted 50% off companion fare for travel between Albany and New York City. It is good through September 2006. Use code V383. Not valid for travel north or west of Albany.

The Amtrak station in Schenectady will be rehabilitated. The project will be managed by the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), which also handled the renovations of the Saratoga Springs and Rensselaer stations. The improvements will make it easier to transfer to and from CDTA buses at the station.

The annual Maple Festival is being held April 1st and 2nd in Marathon, NY. NYS&W will be running rail service to and from the event (one round trip), starting at the Armory Square station in Syracuse. The train also makes a stop in Tully. There will also be several shuttle trains between Cortland and Marathon.
