Libertyville (IL) Review by Chicago Tribune, 10/16/17:

New Libertyville Metra station on hold after bids come in more than $1M over budget

A rebuild of the downtown Libertyville Metra station was years in the making, but the project is now on hold after bids came in well above what village officials projected.

Budgeted at just over $1 million, plans for a new Metra station were approved on June 13 in conjunction with an adjoining housing development, but the lowest of seven bids came in at $2.39 million, according to Libertyville Village Administrator Chris Clark.

“I’ve been very adamant with him about my disappointment over our bids for this,” Mayor Terry Weppler said. “From day one, everyone has been told we have $1.1 million. That’s the amount we’ve got. These are not taxpayer dollars from your property taxes or from anything else other than from (Metra) parking fees. There aren’t going to be any other dollars available.”

Metra news release

Metra and Libertyville celebrate completion of Libertyville Station project

(July 26, 2019) - Metra joined with Libertyville and Lake County officials today to dedicate the newly renovated station facility at Metra’s Libertyville Station on the Milwaukee District North Line.

The $1.3 million project includes a complete renovation of the 1,464-square-foot depot structure and the addition of ADA-accessible restroom facilities. In addition to upgrades to the station’s interior, the renovations included a complete redo of the building’s roofline to create a vaulted ceiling and the upgrade of the exterior features with decorative stone work and other architectural elements.

“The new station offers our passengers a much more attractive gateway to this community with facilities that will better serve our existing riders and attract new ones,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski.

“The Village of Libertyville committed revenues from the Commuter Parking Fund to upgrade the Libertyville station in partnership with Metra, beginning in 2016,” said Libertyville Mayor Terry Weppler. “The station is well-utilized and an important component of our community and vibrant downtown, and was in need of a cosmetic and functional upgrade. The new station provides an inviting atmosphere, restroom facilities, an improved drop-off area, new benches and bike racks. This project will have a lasting impact for future generations, and I am proud to see it completed.”

The project also included improvements to the station area with a new and improved Kiss & Ride drop-off lane, new signage, bike racks and benches.

This project was funded with federal capital dollars obtained by Metra for station improvements and with Libertyville commuter parking lot funds. RM Swanson Architects of Lake Forest designed the project and Libertyville-based Efraim Carlson and Sons was the contractor.
