Just another bump to this thread to remind everyone that we still meet every Sunday evening 9:30 PM ET, which is 8:30 PM CT, 7:30 PM MT, and 6:30 PM PT.  We try to have topics to discuss related to the news of the week or our participants' travel plans, but sometimes we remain relatively silent, as I suppose there are conflicting forms of entertainment.  Anything related to trains that you wish to discuss with others, feel free to attend one of more of our regularly scheduled Chat sessions at the aforementioned times.

Again on Sundays, please look through the rail headlines, which you can see on our board in the list of most previous posts. Bring those to the conversation and hopefully somebody else will respond and then presto, you've got a conversation going that others can either watch or participate in as well.

Coming up on March 19th, 2017, well that Sunday I will be in travel, and will get to test how the Auto Train's WiFi works from someplace in southern Virginia or northern North Carolina, and how I can react with our Chat. If you lose me, you know why. If it doesn't work right in my roomette in car 5345, Room 3, I'll try to take my act to the lounge car and set up shop.   By the following weekend (3/26), well I'd better have already arrived home by then.

Chat is down tonight (5/7/17), sorry!   Hopefully it will work by next week.    Most likely a server issue with our host. Usually the best thing is just to wait, and when whomever realizes it and resets the server, we should be ok from that point.

Bad news, everyone. We found out that the reason Chat no longer works is that IPB decided to eliminate the feature as of May 1st. Notice of this was only posted on a website where one would only see it if they happened to be there.

Alternatives are being explored, and once a viable and affordable option is found and optimized, we will let you know in this thread of its availability. It may not be this coming week.

What about paltalk. You can set the room to private so only those with a code can get in if you don't want outsiders who are not on the forum attending. Basic membership is free.

We are trying Paltalk.  A room called On Track On Line has been set up.   To use it, one needs to go to http://www.paltalk.com/ and follow the instructions to download the software. It takes just a few minutes.

Once you have downloaded the software, CLOSE ALL BROWSER WINDOWS that were opened by the download process.  There should be a new icon (app) on your desktop that you will need to click to launch Paltalk.

Once launched, you need to search for our room in the upper left corner search box.  It may take a few tries to "find" the room.

We did go the free route, which means the room can only be used when a designated Administrator is present.  We will continue to start our Chat sessions on Sundays at 9:30 PM Eastern (8:30 Central, 6:30 Pacific, etc.), however I will try to be in the room earlier.

It may take a week or two until we are all comfortable chatting there, as a learning curve can be expected with anything new.  Again even after downloading the software you won't be able to chat with anyone until one of the Admins has joined. So your testing might have to be done during the chat session itself, unless other arrangements are made to chat at a different time if one of the Admins can help you to test.

Just a heads-up. PalTalk cannot be used on a Chromebook. The desktop version requires either Windows or MacOS.

There are mobile versions for iOS and Android, but the iOS app is not designed for iPad. It will run on iPad, but just as an enlarged version of the iPhone app.

Since I travel with a Chromebook (and use it at home to chat), I would prefer to have a "chat" that will work on the Chromebook.  I am on an Alaska cruise right now and was unable to attempt to chat this evening Alaska time (or last night EDT).

At this time, my recommendation is to NOT install the PalTalk app.

A group of us is working with a different chat system that, if implemented, will be run outside the On Track On Line environment. It will not require Paltalk or any other special software.
