NS Intermodal service alert:

Unsafe Chassis Alert - Update

Jun 27, 2015

As noted in the service alert below that was issued Friday June, 26th 2015, NS has been advised of a potential manufacturer’s defect on 1,114 chassis in the range NSPZ 150291 – 151404.  This defect is a potentially missing axle spindle nut lock ring on the wheel end.  This lock ring serves to keep the bearings in place, there is a risk of a wheel end separation from the axle.  Please do not move these chassis on a public road until they are inspected to determine if they are roadworthy and safe to use.

NS is taking the following steps to inspect the chassis:

  • Companies in possession of these chassis are being contacted and provided with a list of the chassis that NS records show are in each company’s possession.
  • Each company in possession of these chassis is being asked to:
    • contact Interstar (via phone 800-888-1001 or via email dispatch@interstar.com with “NS chassis safety campaign” in the subject line) to request an inspection of the axle spindle nuts on each of the affected chassis that may be in that company’s  possession.
    • provide a complete physical address and a contact person to Interstar for each chassis to be inspected and an indication whether the container on the chassis is loaded or empty.
  • Interstar will communicate to each contact person(s) and to NS as each chassis is inspected whether the chassis can be returned to service or if repair will be required.
  • Periodic updates will be provided.

Your assistance throughout this process is greatly appreciated.

Unsafe Chassis Alert – June 26, 2015

Norfolk Southern has been advised by a chassis manufacturer that some of their equipment may be missing a key part that would make the chassis unsafe to move over a public road.

Until further notice from NS, please do not move any NS chassis in the series NSPZ 150291 – 151404 over any public road.

We will provide additional information regarding the chassis and/or container disposition as soon as it is available.

NS Intermodal Service Alert:

Chassis Safety Concern Update June 30, 2015

Jun 30, 2015

As Norfolk Southern has been communicating over the past few days, a chassis manufacturer advised NS of a potential manufacturer’s defect on 1,114 chassis in the range NSPZ 150291 – 151404.  This potential defect is a missing axle spindle nut lock ring.  Without this lock ring, there is a risk that the wheel end will separate from the axle.  390 of these chassis have been inspected and released to service, and 252 of these chassis have been captured on Norfolk Southern terminals.

In addition to the series of chassis listed above, another manufacturer of chassis has advised us that an additional 140 new chassis may need to be inspected to ensure that the lug nuts are properly torqued so that the chassis do not experience a wheel failure.  All of these chassis have now been captured and they will be held out of service until we can verify that all have properly torqued lug nuts.

The following link Chassis Requiring Inspection provides a listing of the 472 chassis that are not in the possession of NS that require an inspection before they are safe to operate on a public road.  Please note that this link sorts the chassis by various means (under separate tabs) such as chassis number, motor carrier, and shipper.  NS will update this data periodically.  The association of the chassis on the list to shippers and truckers is provided, but only to the extent we have that shipper or trucker information which may not be complete or current.  If you are in possession of any of the chassis on the attached list, we ask that you contact Interstar directly (via phone 800-888-1001 or via email dispatch@interstar.com with “NS chassis safety campaign” in the subject line) for inspection of those chassis.

Interstar will need a complete physical address and a contact person for each chassis to be inspected.  Please indicate if the container on the chassis is loaded or empty.

Interstar will communicate to your contact person(s) as each chassis is inspected whether the chassis can be returned to service or if a repair will be required.
