RTA ridership increases for fourth straight year

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) overcame horrible winter conditions in the first quarter of 2014 to finish with its fourth straight year of ridership growth.

Ridership rose by 8 percent in December, the largest monthly increase in four years, as bus and HealthLine trips grew by more than 10 percent. For the year, total ridership exceeded 49.25 million.

RAIL: Construction interruptions kept rail use low much of the summer, as work continued on the Little Italy-University Circle Station and the Cedar-University Station. For the year, combined ridership on the all rail lines -- Red, Blue and Green and Waterfront -- was down 3.6 percent.

PARATRANSIT: Paratransit use continued to rise, putting significant strain on RTA’s service capabilities. Total trips on Paratransit exceeded three quarters of a million, a 6.7 percent increase.

LOOKING AHEAD: RTA’s ridership goal for 2015 is 51.25 million trips, a 2.5 percent increase.
