Winter Storm Update - February 2, 2015

What to expect when winter weather hits.

A severe winter storm is forecast to hit parts of the MBTA’s service area Sunday night and through the day on Monday. Due to significant snowfall forecasts and the likelihood of high winds, the MBTA has put its winter weather plan into effect.

The timing and projected accumulation of Monday's snowfall will make it difficult for customers to maneuver their vehicles around MBTA parking lots, particularly in the afternoon and evening. Work crews will try very hard to keep the lots' travel lanes and exits clear, but heavy snow will accumulate in the immediate areas around vehicles occupying spaces. Predicted high winds will also lead to snowdrifts throughout the system. Customers are strongly encouraged to consider these factors if using MBTA parking lots on Monday.

Customers are strongly advised to plan for extra travel time, dress appropriately, and to check for the most current service information before starting their commutes. Because RIDE service will be affected by road conditions, paratransit customers are urged to stay in contact with their specific service provider.

Service information can be found at the MBTA's winter resource hub: mbta.com/winter. Customers are also urged to check T-Alerts regularly for updates or to join our 95,000 followers on Twitter @MBTA. For Commuter Rail updates, we ask commuters to follow the MBTA Commuter Rail on Twitter @MBTA_CR.

Full service details for each mode are as follows:

Winter Storm Update - February 2-3, 2015

What to expect when winter weather hits.

Following the snowiest seven day period in Boston history, please expect impacts to service on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, on all subway and Commuter Rail Lines. Decades-old equipment may experience more frequent mechanical issues. Switches and signals may also be adversely affected by frigid temperatures.

Buses will continue to replace Mattapan Trolley service between Ashmont and Mattapan stations from start to end of service on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Because RIDE service will be affected by road conditions, paratransit customers are urged to stay in contact with their specific service provider.

Please expect longer wait times, plan for extra travel time, and dress appropriately. We encourage customers to check for the most current service information before starting their commutes. Service information can be found at the MBTA's winter resource hub: mbta.com/winter. Customers are also urged to check T-Alerts regularly for updates or to join our 95,000 followers on Twitter @MBTA. Baker blasts this morning's "unacceptable" MBTA mess

Gov. Charlie Baker today called the rash of morning delays on the MBTA “unacceptable” and asked riders to be patient and plan ahead as the system grapples with bone-chilling temps and mounting snow.

“We will continue to work closely with Secretary (Stephanie) Pollack and General Manager Beverly Scott to monitor the T, especially the Red Line, during today’s frigid temperatures and snow cleanup efforts,” Baker said, adding that he plans to meet with Scott “soon to discuss ways to improve service and better serve our communities that rely on the T to get to and from work.”

Big MBTA Woes For Weather-Weary Commuters

BOSTON — The MBTA struggled mightily Tuesday, following a record-breaking week of snowfall and persistent cold temperatures.

All T subway lines experienced severe delays during both commutes. In the morning, shuttle buses had to replace some Green Line trolleys and the T said in a statement: “Due to a shortage of fully functioning subway cars, customers are asked to consider an alternative to the Red Line today.”

The head of the T went further.

“Quite candidly, if you don’t wind up having to use the service [Tuesday], that probably is a plus,” MBTA GM Beverly Scott said Tuesday morning. “I’m just going to be candid. I’ve never said that in my life, but I don’t want to wind up misleading anyone.”

There were also significant delays on several commuter rail lines.

Continue here.
