Operation Lifesaver “Shark” Safety PSAs Will Be Featured in Amtrak Stations May 9

WASHINGTON, DC, May 5, 2009 – Amtrak will showcase Operation Lifesaver’s “Shark” rail safety public service advertisements (PSAs) in four major cities as part of its celebration of National Train Day, May 9, 2009. National Train Day commemorates the first transcontinental railroad and promotes rail travel with major events in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles, and other events in communities nationwide.
“These PSAs provide a humorous reminder that safety is an essential part of train travel,” said Operation Lifesaver President Helen M. Sramek. “Using common sense is an easy way to practice safety around tracks and trains,” she continued.
The PSAs, aimed at pedestrians and drivers, can be viewed online at www.oli.org/shark.
“Operation Lifesaver is proud to partner with Amtrak for National Train Day festivities. People of all ages who love trains and train travel will have an opportunity to learn more about safety when they see these spots running on the station monitors in the four cities,” Sramek said.
Operation Lifesaver volunteers will participate in National Train Day activities in the four cities with displays and information giveaways.
Federal safety statistics show that in 2008, 285 people were killed and 930 were injured in 2,387 highway-rail crossing collisions nationwide. An additional 455 pedestrians were killed and 425 injured while illegally trespassing on railroad tracks in 2008.
