From New Colonist online magazine:

Omaha, renowned for its important history and continuing dominance in railroading, once had one of the largest streetcar networks in the US; the last streetcar rolled in March 1955. Forty-one years later, Omaha Mayor Hal Daub began to campaign for a trolley line to serve downtown....

From Metro Area Transit (MAT)'s website:

Growth in employment, retail development and residential housing from downtown Omaha to the western city limits has changed the complexion of the community. It is Metro Area Transit's intent to provide transit services that reflect changes in the community. As our city changes, so must MAT.

According to APTA's heritage trolley link, there is community interest in building a trolley line in the eastern section of the city. In fact there was federal money allocated to study the concept. Skeptics have "pooh-poohed" the plan saying ersatz trolleys on rubber tires can transport the same number of projected passengers for less money. Commuter rail service from Omaha to Nebraska's capital, Lincoln, is under study. Sloan

From Omaha, NE World-Herald, 1/30/04:

Former Mayor Hal Daub attempted to get the idea of a trolley system back on track Thursday by suggesting a new downtown route running from the new Gallup University campus to the base of the 10th Street Bridge near the Old Market.

From Omaha, NE World Herald, 4/3/04:

Eight Omahans working on a master plan to revitalize midtown Omaha went to Portland, Ore., this week to see what that city has done.

Portland has been a leader in redeveloping old neighborhoods and commercial districts. The Omaha group was impressed.

This is where you will find this story.

I know this is begining to sound like a broken record, but it seems that higher gas prices could start inducing some cities that thought they did not need Electric Light Rail into building it anyway. It may be getting to be routine for prices to top $3 per gallon. Also, if Omaha followed the way other cities built streetcars, if they do it at all, they might consider selling sponsorships, and they have one local company that could buy a sponsorship, UNION PACIFIC.

It's good to see a pro-streetcar grass roots organization take hold in Omaha. Also, heartening is the positive interest by Omaha's mayor. If the organizations can sustain momentum, perhaps they wil have a starter line up and running by 2009. The group seems to have eclipsed the efforts of an entrepreneur (Heartland Gondolas of America) who planned to build a line along the Missouri River connecting a museum and the Qwest convention center. This initiative came on the scene several years ago, but frequent searchs of the Web have turned up no further news. Sloan
