Operation of the California Zephyr has been disrupted by a major snowstorm in the Sierra Nevada range.  Seven feet of snow fell over the weekend at the Donner Pass summit, which is at 7200 ft elevation, and blizzard winds of over 100 mph caused extensive drifts.  Trains 5 and 6 have been turning at Salt Lake City since Friday, March 1.  This left one set of equipment stranded at Emeryville.  Train 6 is set to resume Eastbound service from Emeryville on Wed, March 6 and Westbound train 5 will operate over Donner Pass into Sacramento and Emeryville starting on Thursday, March 2.  But thanks to Amtrak's failure to get Superliner equipment idled in 2020 by COVID back into service, no coach seats can be booked until March 11 on train 5 and March 12 on train 6.
