Queens A Train Suspension Caused by Massive Theft of Copper Cable

Cable Theft Near Howard Beach Disrupted Service for Hundreds of Thousands; NYPD Transit Bureau Investigating Crime While MTA Crews Make Repairs

Hundreds of thousands of Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit subway customers were victimized this morning by a massive theft of copper cable from A Line line subway tracks near Howard Beach, Queens. Limited A Line train service is being restored at this moment but residual delays will persist throughout the day.

“This morning’s service disruption was directly caused by the theft of cable from along the subway right of way. This led to delays and crowding along all 31 miles of the A Line train, and forced thousands of Rockaways customers to use shuttle buses to get to work,” said MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco. “We are working closely with the NYPD Transit Bureau to help them investigate this crime and identify the culprits responsible.”

The loss of the subway power cables forced the MTA to suspend service between Rockaway Boulevard and Broad Channel stations and replace it with shuttle buses during the morning rush. While limited A Line train service is being restored, shuttle buses will continue until service fully resumes through the Rockaways. Service will be suspended and replaced by shuttle buses again tonight for more emergency repair work overnight.

This crime also disrupted service along the entire length of the A Line and C Line lines. Subway trains stored in the Rockaway Park yard are trapped there and cannot be used for service. Trains in service on the A Line line cannot use the terminals at Far Rockaway-Mott Av and Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St to turn around, further limiting capacity along the line. Some A Line trains are terminating at Euclid Av, where the C Line usually terminates, forcing a reduction in C Line service as well.

The A Line and C Line lines carry 775,000 approximately customers per day, including 100,000 in the morning rush hour. The majority of those customers experienced delays and/or crowding due to this crime. The A Line train carries about 40,000 customers to and from the Rockaways each day, including 3,700 to Manhattan during the morning rush, none of whom were able to use the subways.

The cable theft was discovered at 11:22 p.m. Tuesday night when a northbound A Line train lost power north of the Howard Beach station. Crews brought in another train behind it, and the estimated 150 customers on board were able to walk through the trains to get back to the Howard Beach station at 12:09 a.m.

The power cable was presumably stolen to be sold as scrap. At least 500 feet of the valuable cable was discovered stolen from roughly 12 locations along the A Line train tracks near Howard Beach, and some signal equipment and track components were damaged as well by electrical current that could not flow through the cable.

Crews are working to rebuild the damaged infrastructure as quickly as possible.

MTA NYCT Service Advisory: Queens A Train Service Replaced by Shuttle Buses Between Broad Channel and Rockaway Boulevard

MTA New York City Transit has suspended A Line train service between Broad Channel and Rockaway Boulevard because of problems with third rail power near Howard Beach. Shuttle buses will replace the A Line train on this section until further notice.

For northbound service from the Rockaway Peninsula to Brooklyn and Manhattan, customers from Far Rockaway can take an A Line train shuttle to Broad Channel, and customers from Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St can take the S Line shuttle to Broad Channel. Buses from Broad Channel will service the Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Aqueduct-North Conduit Av stations on their way to the Rockaway Blvd station, where customers can take the A Line train into Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Because of ongoing station renewal work that has closed the Queens-bound platform at Rockaway Blvd, customers heading southbound to the Rockaways should take the A Line train to 88 St to transfer to shuttle buses. The buses will serve Aqueduct-North Conduit Av, Howard Beach-JFK Airport and Broad Channel, where A Line shuttle and S Line shuttle service will be available to Rockaway Peninsula stations.

Customers on the Rockaway Peninsula should plan on extra time for their travels and should consider alternate service. MTA Long Island Rail Road will cross-honor MetroCards at the LIRR Far Rockaway station. Customers may also take the Q35, Q52, Q53, Q113 and Q114 buses as alternatives.

Service on the A Line and C Line lines will be reduced to accommodate these changes, and customers should anticipate some delays and crowding on their travels. Customers heading to or from John F. Kennedy International Airport should connect to the JFK AirTrain at the E Line train station at Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av, or at the LIRR’s Jamaica Station.

WABC-TV, ABC-7 in New York, NY, 5/27/15:

Massive delays on A, C lines caused by copper cable theft

The MTA says copper cable thieves were to blame for delays on the A and C trains that made for a difficult commute for hundreds of thousands of customers Wednesday morning.

This is the story.    According to the above, here is the latest service pattern for the night hours:

Trains will operate as follows:

  • A trains operate normally between 207 St and Ozone Park-Lefferts-Blvd.
  • A overnight shuttle service provided between Euclid Av and Howard Beach.
  • S shuttle will operate from Far Rockaway to Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St.
  • In the Rockaways, use S shuttle train at Rockaway Park and Far Rockaway, connecting to shuttle buses at Beach 90 St.
  • At Far Rockaway, customers can also take the LIRR to Manhattan. MTA Long Island Rail Road is cross-honoring valid MetroCards at the Far Rockaway station.
  • No subway service at Broad Channel; take shuttle buses at Cross Bay Blvd and Noel Rd.
  • The southbound platform at Rockaway Blvd is shut for rehabilitation. Riders going to the Rockaways should take A trains to 88 St, and transfer to shuttle buses to connect to S trains at Beach 90 St.

So once again as happened following Sandy, the connection at Hummel's Wye is hosting trains, only they are using the S rollsign rather than H.
