Amtrak announced that it has named Charles W. “Wick” Moorman as its next president/CEO. Moorman, retired chairman, CEO, and president of Norfolk Southern Corp. (NS), will lead the company, effective September 1, 2016, in the next fiscal year.

Moorman, a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., comes to Amtrak after more than 40 years at NS where he rose from management trainee to CEO and chairman of the Board of Directors. Having worked with NS from the ground up, Moorman gained an appreciation for the many facets of railroad operations and used this knowledge to modernize the way NS conducted business, served customers and worked with communities.

A graduate of Georgia Tech and Harvard Business School, Moorman serves on the boards of Duke Energy Corp., Chevron Corp., the Virginia chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and the Georgia Tech Foundation.

Moorman succeeds current CEO Joe Boardman, who announced his intention to retire last fall. "Under [Boardman's] leadership, Amtrak delivered record ridership, introduced a series of safety initiatives and modernized its fleet," said Anthony Coscia, chairman of the Board of Directors of Amtrak.

“It is an honor and privilege to take on the role of CEO at Amtrak and I look forward to working with its dedicated employees to find ways to provide even better service to our passengers and the nation,” said Moorman. “At Norfolk Southern, our team fostered change by placing a solid emphasis on performance across all aspects of our business which helped develop a stronger safety and service culture throughout the company. I look forward to advancing those same goals at Amtrak and helping to build a plan for future growth.”

Moorman currently holds securities of a rail carrier. Amtrak will ensure that any conflict will be avoided as is required by federal law.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amtrak announced that it has named Charles W. “Wick” Moorman as its next president and chief executive officer. Moorman, retired chairman, CEO, and president of Norfolk Southern Corp. (NS), will lead the company, effective September 1, 2016, in the next fiscal year.

Anthony Coscia, chairman of the Board of Directors of Amtrak said, “We are very pleased that someone with Wick’s experience and vision will lead Amtrak during this critical period as the company charts a course for future growth and improvement.  Under CEO Joe Boardman, and with the support of the Administration and Congress, Amtrak has achieved record levels of performance and investment.  The Board believes Wick can build upon this success in the coming year by launching initiatives to further enhance safety and customer service, modernize our operations, and guide our implementation of the FAST Act.”

A graduate of Georgia Tech and Harvard Business School, Moorman serves on the boards of Duke Energy Corporation, Chevron Corporation, the Virginia chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and the Georgia Tech Foundation.

“Wick’s deep operational background and track record of building teams and driving innovation is exactly what we need to provide unparalleled service to the more than 500 communities we serve,” said Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Jeffrey Moreland. “We are confident that, working together with the Board, Wick can formulate a strong plan to take Amtrak to the next level and assemble the management team and expertise to carry it forward.”

Moorman succeeds current CEO Joe Boardman, who announced his intention to retire last fall.   “I have been humbled to lead this extraordinary organization over the past eight years,” said Boardman. “I look forward to spending time with my family and wish Wick all the best as he brings his excellent experience to Amtrak.”

“The Board and I thank Joe for his dedicated service to Amtrak and its customers and for his long career in public service.  Under his leadership, Amtrak delivered record ridership, introduced a series of safety initiatives and modernized its fleet.  For this, he should be proud,” Coscia said.

Moorman currently holds securities of a rail carrier. Amtrak will ensure that any conflict will be avoided as is required by federal law.

AAR news release:

AAR Commends Selection of New Amtrak President & CEO Wick Moorman

Acknowledges Contributions of Out-going President and CEO Joe Boardman

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 19, 2016 – The Association of American Railroads (AAR) issued the following statement by President and CEO Edward R. Hamberger in response to the announcement that the Amtrak Board of Directors has named Wick Moorman President and CEO of Amtrak, succeeding Joe Boardman.

Wick Moorman

"Wick Moorman is a proven railroader whose track record of success demonstrates his commitment and adherence to rail safety, efficiency and service to customers. His contributions and leadership in the freight rail industry, I believe, will advance the working partnership the freight railroads have with Amtrak.

The AAR and its freight rail members recognize the importance of Amtrak as a reliable U.S. passenger rail service and look forward to working with Wick in his new capacity."

Joe Boardman

"Joe recognized the delicate balance that exists in this country between freight rail and passenger rail and was a partner in forging new ways to find that right transportation mix. Joe's steadfast commitment to positively advancing the role of Amtrak and raising the profile of passenger rail in the United States has left an enduring record of achievement."

NARP:

Hotline # 977: Amtrak announces new CEO; FRA Provides Boost for PTC Installation; FTA Awards to Award Grants to Transit Agencies

August 19, 2016

Amtrak announced today that longtime rail industry executive Charles “Wick” Moorman will be the company’s next President and CEO beginning September 1

“Wick comes to Amtrak after more than 40 years at NS where he rose from management trainee to CEO,” stated Amtrak in an employee advisory. “Having worked at NS from the ground up, he and his team modernized the way that NS conducted business, served customers and worked with communities. As CEO, Wick emphasized performance and teamwork across all aspects of the company, helping to drive a new culture of safety and service throughout NS’s system. When he retired, NS was well-positioned to leverage opportunities and manage future challenges.”

“Wick’s 40 years of railroad experience at Norfolk Southern, along with his obvious commitment to a strong and thriving national rail network, positions him perfectly to execute a vision for a 21st Century Amtrak,” said NARP President & CEO Jim Mathews in a public statement. “It was my understanding that Wick was looking forward to enjoying well-earned time off with his family. The fact that he came out of retirement to help Amtrak meet the opportunities and challenges that come with 15 years of explosive growth demonstrates a true passion for America’s rail system.

“With more 300-plus trains connecting over 500 destinations across America each and every day, it’s a big job,” continued Mathews. “Moorman’s experience with building teams focused on service and safety will serve America’s passengers well.”

“And of course we’d be remiss to not to take the opportunity to thank Joe Boardman for his service,” added Mathews. “NARP has greatly valued working with Joe as president of Amtrak. He understands that for the railroad to thrive, it needs to be a national service, and that long distance trains are—as Joe said himself—the ‘backbone’ of America’s national network.”

Moorman is coming out of retirement (from Norfolk Southern). I get the feeling he won't be around long. David Gunn came out of retirement to run Amtrak, and he was there only 3-1/2 years. Alexander Kummant also came from a freight railroad background, and did not last more than 2 years 3 months.

Reportedly, Mr. Moorman will be paid a $1 annual salary, plus the ability to earn up to a $500,000 annual bonus based on unspecified performance indicators. Moving from years of leadership from public transit and government agencies to someone who ran both a railroad and a for-profit business could be culture shock at Amtrak. My personal option: the sooner Joe Boardman cleans out his office and starts collecting his multiple pensions, the better.
