The Washington Post 12/21:

NAACP to challenge cancellation of Baltimore Red Line rail project

The NAACP on Monday filed a federal civil rights complaint against Maryland, alleging that the state discriminated against African American residents in Baltimore when Gov. Larry Hogan killed the Red Line rail project and diverted state money to road and bridge projects elsewhere.

“This is a critical civil rights issue,” said Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. “Everyone who knows this city knows that the lack of rapid transit restricts access to jobs and housing for low- and middle-income African American residents living along the city’s east-west corridor.”

Greater Greater Washington, 12/29/15:

2015's greatest hits: Will the Purple Line appear on the Metro map?

With the Purple Line's future looking brighter, it is finally becoming easier to envision the embattled light rail line becoming a reality. But if the line does become a part of our region's transit network, will it also be a part of the iconic Metro map?

Purple Line Divided: $5.6 billion light rail moving forward

When Gregory Sanders was a child, his father, Harry Sanders, would take him to the railroad tracks by their Silver Spring home. There, the two would walk the nearby state-owned CSX trail and catch sight of a coal train as it sped off to a heating plant in Georgetown, on the other end of the tracks.

Maryland Purple Line lands $874.6 million TIFIA loan

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx earlier this week announced an $874.6 million federal loan to Purple Line Transit Partners LLC for the implementation of the Maryland Purple Line.

The Washington Post,7/24:

In Riverdale Park, outcry over ‘Trump Wall’ planned at Purple Line station

Just months before construction is slated to begin on Maryland’s Purple Line, pressure is mounting on the state to reverse plans to put one of its stations atop a 26-foot-tall concrete wall that residents say will split a striving commercial district in Prince George’s County.

The Riverdale Park station — one of 21 planned stops along the east-west light-rail line connecting Prince George’s and Montgomery counties — was redesigned last year from a bridge structure to a retained fill wall, a change that state transportation officials say will save $5 million to $6 million.

State officials say the cost-cutting measure was needed to move the $5.6 billion project forward. But the changes have ignited an outcry among residents and local elected officials who view the 500-foot-long, 47-foot-wide wall as an unacceptable alternative and a threat to the area’s revitalization efforts.

Commentary in Baltimore, MD Sun, 8/2/21:

Odds of Red Line resurrection slim in Baltimore, but upgrading east-west city transit is an achievable goal

The town houses at Oldham Crossing in Greektown — which has been rediscovered of late for its proximity to major commuter thoroughfares and to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus — are billed as luxurious, with big bathrooms, up to four bedrooms and well-appointed kitchens. There’s even a dog park. What’s not commonly mentioned is that the community sits near Eastern Avenue in the middle of what was once regarded as the right-of-way for the Red Line, the $2.9 billion east-west light rail project that Gov. Larry Hogan canceled six years ago.

It's baaaaaack.    At least talk about it is back.    Amazing that in 6 years, no viable alternatives have surfaced.   Continue reading here.
