CatTrain press release, 4/6:

Caltrain to Hold Public Meetings on Electrification

Caltrain is holding a series of four public meetings to obtain public comments on the Environmental Assessment/Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Caltrain Electrification Program.

Caltrain has examined the technical and environmental impacts of converting its train service from diesel-hauled to electric-powered trains throughout the entire Caltrain corridor, which extends from San Francisco to Gilroy. Caltrain is planning to electrify the line using an overhead catenary system. Electrification will allow Caltrain to increase the amount of service it operates while decreasing engine noise and environmental pollution.

The recently released environmental document presents these results for public review and comment. For convenience, meetings will be held in four locations, as follows:

San Francisco
Thursday, April 22
6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
600 Townsend, San Francisco
Three blocks from the Caltrain station

Northern Santa Clara County
Saturday, April 24
10 a.m. - Noon
Sunnyvale Senior Community Center
820 W. McKinley Ave., Sunnyvale
VTA Routes 32, 54

Southern Santa Clara County
Wednesday, April 28
6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Morgan Hill Community Center
17000 Monterey Rd., Morgan Hill

San Mateo County
Saturday, May 1
10 a.m. - noon
Caltrain Headquarters
1250 San Carlos Ave., San Carlos
SamTrans Routes 390, 391, KX

A complete version of the environmental document, as well as an executive summary, is available at local libraries.

Members of the public can comment on the report by attending one of the meetings. Written and e-mailed comments also will be taken through May 25 at electrification@caltrain.com or by writing Caltrain Electrification, 1250 San Carlos Ave., San Carlos, CA, 94070.

From the San Mateo Daily Journal:

A plan to electrify Caltrain and introduce technology only seen in Europe and the East Coast is getting mixed reviews from Peninsula riders.

From San Francisco, CA Chronicle, 7/25/04:

Even Atherton has a wrong side of the tracks, and Willie Mays and Charles Schwab both live there, on Fair Oaks Lane, where the train stops.

The article mentions the Doomsday scenario that includes threats to make CalTrain a rush hour only service, curtailing all midday, weekend, evening, and reverse commute service. If that happens, it probably won't pay to electrify the line. Of the currently operating electrified commuter lines, I believe that all have 7-day service in all of the off peak hours mentioned above. So if the ridership isn't there for them to continue to operate outside of the rush hours, then it isn't there for them to be energizing overhead catenary or third rail.

Progressive Railroading, 4/19/11:

Caltrain plans to conduct a series of feasibility studies to determine whether the electrification of the commuter-rail system can be designed to meet Caltrain’s future needs, while also accommodating initial high-speed rail operations on California’s Peninsula Corridor.

Here is your story.

An agreement between the California High Speed Rail Authority and more than a half-dozen San Francisco Bay Area public agencies will fully fund the electrification and modernization of the Caltrain system. Once the system is electrified, Caltrain will be able to operate lighter-weight electric vehicles. View the full article

Progressive Railroading

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has reached an agreement with more than a half-dozen San Francisco Bay area public agencies to fully fund the electrification and modernization of Caltrain’s commuter-rail system.

The parties are taking advantage of local, regional and federal funding to leverage hundreds of millions of dollars in high-speed matching funds that can be invested in the Caltrain corridor, according to a Caltrain press release. As a result, Caltrain’s system could be electrified by 2020 — a decade sooner than estimates included in CHSRA’s latest business plan.

I know rolling stock selection is a way off, and it would go through the usual RFP process, but I was wondering what might be the frontrunners. CalTrain has a waiver to use lighter-weight European Double-Deck EMUs, so I was wondering, would it most likely be a competition between the Alstom Coradia Duplex and the Bombardier Omneo?

Clearance has to be a consideration, since CalTrain would be running through a tunnel from its current terminus at 4th & King Streets to a new station underneath the Transbay Terminal.

Probably one of the reasons they are working closely with the CHSRA, even though they will not be getting to San Francisco for awhile. At least get tunnel for the portion it will share with CalTrain's DTX(Downtown Extension) designed now, they can get the RFP going. I used to think the electric pantographs, once raised, were rigid, but I have observed the ones on Sound Transit's LRVs seem to be a little flexible, to take into account tunnel height.

I see the need for the FRA waiver though. CalTrain looks like the plan is to use the EMUs only on San Jose-San Francisco services, with Locomotive-hauled(whether Diesel or Electric) still running to Gilroy, and on the proposed Dumbarton Bridge service. There is also a couple of freights that still run on the Peninsula as well. I noticed that, provided the CHRSA can go forward, this is not the only commuter rail operation that will benefit by electrifying, the Altamont Commuter Express is also looking to do the same.
